I feel....deflated after dress shopping.....

AussieAngelxxx, 6 September, 2008 at 18:10 Posted on Planning 0 32

.....so I am eating a bar of chocolate!

I was meeting my H2B for a spot of lunch in Torquay on his lunch break and decided I would get in early to stick my snoz in a little Bridal/Formal dress shop. It was the first time I have been to look at dresses (apart from online ofcourse). I selected a few things I liked and with them in a size bigger then I normally wear I headed up to try them on. They didn't fit!! Neither did the size above that one or the next or the next or the next! So by this time I am wearing a dress 5 sizes bigger then I would normally wear...I come out to show the sales lady (sad I know but I have no family or friends in England)....and she tells me white is not my colour... [:'(] Then Ivory is not my colour....coffee is not my colour..... [:'(]. Maybe I just do not have a colour lol Argh!!!!!!!!!! I did agree with her though....I didn't look right at all!

The link below is a few dresses I like the idea of...and a pic of my ugly mug if anyone is good with colours if they may suggest suitable colour for me.

https://myaccount.photobox.co.uk/?album_id=28986598

Did anyone else have this problem? Would I regret it if I didn't wear a white or version of white dress on my day? Or do you think it is acceptable to wear a bright Aqua or a red dress?

?

I own a dress shop. And I'd say that although white doesn't suit many people, it's REALLY unusual for ivory not to look good. Ivory is a much kinder colour to most skin tones than white is, and I don't think I've had a single bride in the shop that I've thought couldn't wear ivory.

Of course you can wear a colour other than white/ivory. But depending on how 'married' you are to the idea of wearing white/ivory, you might regret not wearing it. I didn't wear a traditional white/ivory gown to get married in, but I was adamant that I didn't want to. If you do want to, then you probably should. A lot of brides feel that it's their one chance to wear a proper wedding gown, and feel like a bride, and that if they choose a different colour, it won't be the same.

With regard to the dress size - well, sadly, bridal manufacturers tend to make their dresses VERY small. It is my one bugbear about bridalwear, and I wish they would either make their sizes more flattering, or call them A,B,C etc rather than 8,10,12 etc. However, bridal dresses are often extremely flattering, and it's what you SEE that matters. You're not going to walk down the aisle with the size label hanging out (or at least I hope not!), and NO ONE needs to know what size your dress is. Remember that the most important thing is that the dress fits you. If you wear a dress that is too small, it will make you look bigger. If you wear a dress that fits, you will look gorgeous and tiny and it will make the best of your figure. Go by the dress designer's size chart and ignore the size. It's just a number. How you look in the dress is the most important thing.

I'm sad you're all the way down south there! If you were nearer to Scotland I'd tell you to get your bum over here to see us!

    Awwww bless you!

My Sister dragged me out to a Bridal shop when she went to pick up my second bridesmaid dress (don't ask - I think I explained it elsewhere!!)

They grabbed this dress and popped it on me and said they could bring it in to make it fit yadda..yadda...

    It fitted fine.

I was then gutted to see it was labelled a size TWENTY!! I'm a size 16 ☹️

This makes me think that the sizes in those dresses may be lying a little bit or aren't even good old British sizes!!

If they're that mean they probably don't want your business (my opinion anyway)

I tried dresses on in Debenhams and they were more interested in the hard sell - they'd have tried to sell me a spud sack if they could have got away with it!!

Wear whatever you want to wear. Whatever you feel like a princess in. If i remember right you are having a small do at Gretna Green due to family issues and therefore you dont need worry about anyone else's opinion, you are the only one that matters!

And as for the size, ignore it. Nobody need see the size label. I am a size 18 or 20, depending on what shop i go to and my dress had to be a size 24 (i was appalled - but when i saw the dress on, it is really sliming.... well worth it)!

    Sx?

    Hello sweet

It is depressing when you realise the size of the dress but as other hitchers have said - ignore it - it's how it looks and feels that is important.

As for colour -you wear what you like - dresses come in so many colours and look really stunning!! I can't imagine ivory not looking good on you to be honest. It is important to keep an open mind about the kind of dress you want as something that doesn't look good on a hanger might come alive when you put it on and be perfect.

I'm in Exeter so if you fancy a shopping trip and an extra opinion, I'm more than happy to help!

Chin up and keep looking - I've been looking for AGES and still not found the one

    xx

Only wear a colour if you really really want to as it's such a big thing. I've never know anyone not suit ivory, I looked OK in ivory however I do look better in the deep red but I only chose that because it's what I wanted. I did try on both until I had made up my mind.

Having a strong colour is a real statement and makes choosing the colours of other things much harder . It really needs to be something you've got your heart set on.

As for the size thing, my dress shop kindly didn't even tell me what size they ordered although I did see the label at my first fitting. It really doesn't matter what it sayes.

Firstly may I say, you're bloody goooorgeous! I don't think your H2B will care on iota what colour your dress is as long as you're in it!

Looking at your picture I can't imagine ivory or gold not suiting you but you'd definitely be able to carry off a bold colour. I'm absolutely with the others though, Don't give up on the ivory until you've tried on plenty more styles.

Also, I was suprised by the size my dress was - and I asked the lady about this.

She said the the size was a reflection of the dress size on the outside - remember the dresses often have inner bodices, and layers of fabric.

So the layer of fabric/bodice closest to your skin is probably your actual dress size, but the outside layer of fabric of the dress is a bigger size so that it can go over the other layers - and thats the size they label it.

Hope that makes sense and makes you feel better. Besides you're a stunning girl - and will find a beautiful dress that makes you look gorgeous

Just 2 echo wot everyone else says, don't worry about sizes. I have no idea wot size my dress is. When I tried on the sample the lady in the shop just said she would order me one size up from that. Could be huge, however the sample gave me a defined waist I didn't realise I had so i don't really care. No one will know but me.

I think wearing red or aqua is more than acceptable! (my dress is red) White made me look really washed out and although ivory looked better I had my heart set on red anyway. My dress was ordered in a couple of sizes bigger than i'd usually wear - i think thats normal so don't fret over that either.

I have no idea why they would say you wouldn't suit gold or ivory, i think you would, but you'd probably look awesome in red or aqua too. If I would you i'd try out some more shops and maybe try on a multitude of colours to see which one makes you feel fabulous!!

    Hi,

Sorry I didn't reply back on your other thread. I was busy with orders and then totally forgot until I saw this thread. This is my dress which isn't white or ivory as both colours just washed me out whereas this kinda made me glow although maybe that is because I felt fab in it.

I also did a modelling photoshot and wore a red dress which surprisingly I loved although I wouldn't have worn it for my wedding. It was great to feel so vibrant as I don't usually wear such bright colours. Wear what you want I say as there aren't any rules of what you should and shouldn't wear.

As for the sizes I could punch my designer as I was nearly in tears in the shop as I measured a size 16 in my hips...............

    1. Ignore the label!!! - it doesn't matter what size your wedding dress is! Ladies are waaaay too hung up on the fact that clothes vary size wise from retailer to retailer and in one they might be a 14 and in another they might be a 16 or even 18 .... and wedding dresses are well known for being a bit 'odd' - it so doesn't matter if its a size 20 ....! Who is ever going to know??!

    2. Get wed in whatever colour you fancy! I did .....

A HUGE thank you to everyone!!!!

I guess I needed someone to tell me is was all going to be okay! I am *trying* to lose some weight and getting a bit down about it all so I guess the whole dress thing came as a bit of an ego blow....you know what us girls are like!! Yes very true it is not like anyone is going to know what size it is anyway. I have never had my heart set on a white dress....always thought I would wear red. I guess when I started looking I felt...like maybe I would let my man down if I didn't wear white although I do not know why as I am sure he wouldn't care....I just want to make him proud. I will talk to him tonight when he comes home....when I do find a great dress he is going to be my second opinion anyway. I think I do kinda have my heart set on a nice turquoise dress...see how it goes but I will try on many many dresses in all different shapes and colours like all of you wonderful ladies have suggested. It is very ture...it is not always the dress you imagine that will be the one of your dreams!!

If you want a non-traditional wedding dress, have you thought about finding a dressmaker and getting one made?

You can then choose the exact colour and style that you want, and there are definitely NO size labels in a made-to-measure dress ?

    Hi AussieAngel,

I to was fed up after my first shopping trip......everything made me look flat and boyish....I rememb looking on with envy at the ladies with curves trying on their dresses they looked like a woman.......we are never happy with what we have are we?

The colour should be what YOU feel best in..I think you would really suit a red or tuquoise dress......and on the size of these dresses........the dress I have is the biggest size in clothing I have ever bought! I remember you saying you had a large bust size and the dress will have to fit this first and the rest would be altered for you.

You are a lovely looking woman and you will find THAT dress and I for one can't wait to see the pics......good luck

    1. You are beautiful!

    2. Wear whatever colour you feel like you want to! Pink, turqouise, whatever - if you like it, wear it!

    3. Do not take one bit of notice of the size label in your dress. Let them measure you in the bridal shop and order whichever size fits best. The lady when I ordered my dress explained that bridal sizes are much larger than usual, and said to me ' I know which size I'm ordering - do you want to know?' and I said NO! as long as it fits ME I don't care!

    4. I can't see how anyone cannot suit ivory!! - try some other shops, please don't be put off by just one shop.

Good idea I took my man to look at wedding dresses just to get an idea of what he would like to see me in and he always gives me an honest opinion After all its a massive buy and often a lot of money you want to get it right.Sometimes tradition isnt all its cracked up to be!!!

I can't really add anything that hasn't been said already other than don't let your experience in one shop put you off. The first shop I went to was great, the staff couldn't have been more helpful and forthcoming with advice and suggestions. A couple of other shops after that weren't as helpful and if they'd been my first I'd have felt like you I think. Just try another few shops and I'm sure you'll get some good advice. Maybe ask on here for recommendations of shops in your area? Good luck!

Hi there - i wore a green wedding dress [see profile picture lol] and i felt like a princess....

tbh my choices were limited cos we got married 6 weeks after setting the date and i was 25 weeks pregnant on the big day - but i was fortunate enuf to find a maternity hire place which did wedding dresses and formal wear - mine was a maternity ball gown and i just loved it!

My H didn't know what i was wearing til the day... he thought i would wear red or purple [i might have given more time] but i loved this dress so much - it was fab ?

good luck - wear what you feel comfortable in!
