I just cant decide on a colour scheme

sarahjolley, 18 November, 2010 at 19:18 Posted on Planning 0 19

Please tell me other brides have gone through this

My original idea was purple, but I just dont seem to be able to commit myself to this colour

There are so many things i want the wedding to be, i keep tinking of a vintage theme but that would need paler colours

But then i have found amaning centrepieces and they dont go with a vintage theme

i think im gonna go mad!!!

Not a great deal of help I know but I always knew since I was little that if I ever got married, my main colour would be Cadburys Purple.

Just so happens it's a current favourite so makes it easier to get things to match it!

Hmm dont think i ever set about trying to think of a theme or colour. Instead just went through loads of mags, wedding and other, and cut out pictures that i liked. Once we had found our venue the whoel thing kind of sorted itself out without me worrying about it.

I think its nice to go with a bright or light colour if you are getting married in spring or summer and maybe a darker one if its autumn or winter. i never knew what colour id want, never had it planned or anythin but when asked i said, well yellows my favourite colour and went from there. luckily though im ordering my bm dressed from same shop as my dress so i held the yellow up against my dress and it didnt look right at all, my dress is too ivory!! so on the spot i flicked through the rest of the dresses, picked up 'kiwi green' and said this will do!!! im a bit too impulsive!!!!

i think you need to work out whats most important to you, bm dresses are a big part of it i think. flowers and centre pieces can be adapted easily. maybe you could adapt centrepieces to suit vintage a bit more?

personally i dont have a theme, i decided itd stress me out too much because it would limit me to what i could have. best of luck

My advice would be, knock up a few mood boards and then spend a few days looking at each one to see what you think..

TBH I know colours don't 'belong' to any one person but I have a minor peed off moment every time someone else says they're having cadbury purple because it's the IN colour and so popular, I spose because I've always known it would be that colour since I was little that I hoped it would be a bit more special instead of people thinking I'm following the trends!!

Mini bridezilla moment I think ?

Hi, were having the colours Fushia Pink & Purple, at first I wanted Pink but thought it might be a bit too much in one colour, I like Purple but thought it might be to dark on its own, so have opted to have both colours together! Were not getting married until 2012, so not sure if it will still be a popular colour by then! x

I went from black and white to orange and pink and everything in between!! in the end it was the venue which dictated the colour scheme- we're gettin married at a converted barn (all the traditional wooden beams etc) and as it's in January i knew it would be dark and cosy so pale colours really wouldn't suit it so we're now going with red, ivory and purple.

If you can't commit to a colour scheme find things you do like and you might find it just all of a sudden pops into place!

Why do you HAVE to have a colour scheme of just two or three anyway? just find stuff you like, anything goes - its YOUR day!

What does your H2b think? I orignally liked yellow, but had the same experience with yellow and ivory dresses looking yucky together, and H2b said he didn't want any colour with red in so no pink or purple either, so we are having blues and creams as i decided i could not be bothered trying to colour match everything and so far it is working really well having lots of similar blue stuff

They could look more Vintage with strings of pearls & Organza Roses in Pink on them. Place them on a mirror with flat backed pearls scattered on the mirror for a more vintage feel.

Colour was one of the biggest stressesfor me too.

I originally wanted peacock feathers so colours would have been teal but then when we found our venue it didn't go at all.

I don't really have a colour scheme now, my BM's dresses are blue but that's about it, everything is lace, pearls and gold.

Can I ask where you got these from ?

I am having a multi-coloured theme, my BMs are all wearing the same dress, but in 5 different colours, and all the other aspects of the wedding are co-ordinating accordingly, so H2B, Best Men, ushers etc are all wearing different colour cravats, each table will be decorated the same but having 2 tables of each of the different colours, all the invites are the same but are being made in all the different colours, the chair sashes will be different colours (they will match each table though) etc, etc, etc !!

I could not decide on one set colour so decided not to !!

The good news looking at your ticker is you've got quite a while yet before you need to make a decision so I wouldn't stress out too much at this stage. Fashions change in colours quite quickly with weddings and what may be the "in" colour this year may not be quite as "in" next. Colours tend to come round in circles of popularity for example, about 4 years ago, lilac was HUGE and virtually every other wedding I did was lilac. This then phased into the introduction of purple with the lilac and then into full blown purple with silver. This went on for about 18months and then suddenly in came burgundy! And so on... This time around purple has come in very much coupled with pinks and blues as well as the return of purple and silver.

Bridesmaid dresses obviously play an important role in colour schemes so it depends really on what you see in the shops at the time you want to buy and what colours suit your maids. The style of the venue can also dictate some colours because if it's a stately home with dark or tapestry type decor, you will need light colours to lift the atmosphere and lighten the room.

You may be best starting with a list of colours you don't like at all, then this will leave a list of possibilities to explore. Paint charts are brill for playing around with! Grab a load from B & Q next time you're in! Also 'real life' Bride magazines are good to see what other people have had and how they chose to match their venue etc. I always think real life photos are better to relate to than posed model shots.

How about something like this by adding crystals and pearls also flowers to soften and add the vintage look. By keeping the colours pastel or soft then you can still achive a Vintage theme :

Sarah, if its any consolation, I went round and round a rainbow of colours before I ended up going with something totally different!! Were now going with a colour called Victorian Lilac which is the colour of my BM dresses from ALfred Angelo.

If your going vintage, have you thought about pinks or greens (Sage & Dusky)??
