i just got barred from the paper shop!

legless, 5 June, 2009 at 20:20 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 50

Seriously.

and i'm not even slightly fishwife. I am shocked though by some of the things paper shop lady said to me.

I went in yesterday to pay my paper bill, bloke behind counter printed out account - £28.80 and then crossed that out and wrote £39.00. I asked why, he couldn't explain. I said i'd check and come back today to pay.

now, bearing in mind they have guessed what papers we want delivered over the past 4 weeks, i wasn't surprised to get a random bill either.

I went back today with a list of what papers I had received and on what dates and what i was going to pay for (£21.80 actually) and he still tried to charge me £39. I asked why and the paper shop lady said I had no brains, i was stupid and shouted and shouted at me. I stood there and repeated "please don't shout at me" and declared that i was only paying the amount i had said.

her points were

1. they were charging me more because they should have delivered the observer (£2) but actually delivered the independent (£1.80) so i should still pay for the observer.

2. they had introduced a delivery charge. (well they hadn't told me, and yesterday the bloke said that started this week)

still no-one could explain £39.

eventually after swearing at me and barring me from coming back she said I could pay £21.80. I offered her a card and she said there would be a fee, i said i'd come backwith cash and she stood in the doorway with her arms across and wouldn't let me leave! she said she didn't believe that i would come back so held me like totally hostage. I am so law abiding you'd feel sorry for me, i was so going back. eventually she let me out, swore at me. unbelievable.

I did get back and pay, I took Dr L who managed to look slightly concerned, which is about as animated as he gets. i demanded an apology and she wouldn't speak.

thanks for listening, i'm a little shocked by my short spell in captivity and actually being barred from somewhere ?

Blimey that sounds awful. Poor you.

What a fabulous way to run a business. I would stick some customer service leaflets through their letterbox!

They wanted you to pay for a newspaper you didn't had because they delivered the wrong (cheaper) one by mistake? And then introduced a delivery charge but didn't tell you?!

Wow. I wish we could name and shame on Hitched.

That's just horrible, I would be very shocked and upset by that. Good for you for standing your ground, I might have crumbled and paid to get out.

If you were having a local paper delivered I'd say contact the distro. dept. and let them know. Not sure if the nationals would be interested but it may be worth a try.

but right, even with my no brains if i accepted all those it would be

    £21.80 + 80p (extra for non existent observer instead of independent) + £2.40 for 4 weeks delivery = £25 i.e. nowhere near £39....

they previosuly barred a load of people who were upset that they couldn't top up their meter cards in the shop anymore. they are a bit loon.

she went on and on about, basically, her business costs, like that's my problem? she must be rolling in it, adding random amounts on to people's bills.

there's nothing else for it, husband will have to fetch the papers.

OH and she wanted to charge a 'fee' because we wanted the financial times and she had to pick that up because it was delivered to her other shop instead of this one..

I mean he'll have to fetch them from another shop, obviously. not from there as they are mental.

she said she'd note the time of the CCTV recording so she could tell the police about me, I mean meee I'm totally harmless and law abiding and i didn't swear or insult her back at all and i even moved aside so they could serve other people, i hate to cause a queue...

Good on you for standing up to the loon I would probably just given in and paid her £39

It's probably best you are barred, she sounds like a nutter, make sure you tell all the neighbours about their excellent customer service skills!

Gosh, they sound like utter loopers, and not the entertaining sort, the really horrid and nasty sort.

You did really well and sounds like you behaved in exactly the right way. I would have probably cried. I'd then worry about it for weeks and expect a knock on the door despite having done nothing wrong.

I'm sure I'd have burst into tears or gone completely fishwife.

Well done for maintaining your dignity. She won't go to the police because I'm sure she knows she's in the wrong and if she doesn't, then they're probably well aware of what a loon she is!

Do you know something, I would phone the police, being held against your will is a crime and therefore I would get the final word on the matter and let the bobbies go and sieze the tape. Nutter that she is.

I went next door to the off licence/ shop to get some cash as i'd rather have paid £1.75 to withdraw cash than hand her my card and he offered me cash back and said i was his most reasonable customer so that was ok, he was very suprised at her business sense in what is frankly a limited catchment area..

You won't shop there FY you could probably only find it if you lived in the surrounding streets, as its on tennyson road in st marks and called tennyson road news.

    and they are very rude.

    so sue me.

Ah no, not in my area. But I will tell everyone at work about what utter cocks they've been to you. As they say, good service gets two recommendations, bad service gets a hundred discreditations.

Good grief. She sounds utterly mental. I don't imagine the police would actually do anything but if there's CCTV I'd be questioning whether you could go to them to report her behaviour. How awful for you.

After having met you, Legless, I can totally believe that you've been barred from a respectable establishment, you unreasonable anarchist, you.

Is it still open? Can we go down there and do some loon-baiting? Oh do say we can.

I agree with Zoay, Peanut and Hazel

I would honestly pop down to your local police station tomorrow and tell them what happened. She can't 'hold' you like that at all. Intimidating cow!

It's totally wrong it happened to you but I'm thinking what if she's doingld shop this kind of thing to little old dears and the like, she could seriously shake someone up.

I hope you aren't too upset by this ?

As for the CCTV, that would show her up entirely.

Bl00dy hell Legless, I'm amazed you got out of there without whacking her one. I think I might have.

I'd also be talking to the local police - she sounds utterly bonkers and in a quiet a nasty way.

? from me and an icky jam-covered one from R too.
