It hadn't been fully cleaned up at this point - but I was rather pleased with myself!!

    Wow - I'm impressed!

This was my effort at the weekend - my very first proper cake...

I want to know how to avoid the 'layered' look - yours look like single layer sponges whereas you can see my 3 layers of sponge - what am I doing wrong? I thought maybe it was because I used sponge instead of madeira or that I cooked 3 layers rather than one big cake and then cut and filled?

That's a damn fine cake - I love the scarf!

The bottom two layers were single layer - bottom one was industrial sized fruit cake. The middle one was chocolate and I used this recipe:-

    /recipes/wedding-cake-rich-dark-chocolate-cake

Which takes two and a half hours to cook, but gives you a solid lump of moist chocolate cake.

The top one, I cooked a two layer lemon sponge..... that was too big. So I had to use a 7" loose bottom cake tin base as a template and cut straight down - which meant no lines!

Would you believe the scarf was the easiest bit ? - I knocked that up as a last minute addition at 2am Saturday night!

H had suggested I made it bigger and then used a smaller tin to cut it down but I wasn't brave enough, I don't have a steady enough hand - I'd have ended up with a hexagon cake.

I've got the baking bug now - I usually make cupcakes as they don't require as much artistic talent or patience but I might attempt that chocolate cake this weekend!
