I need to ask a question about fleas....yuk!

gemm26, 19 May, 2008 at 21:46 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 8

After finding out today out kitten has fleas which was a surprise as he wasn't scratching, the vet sprayed him with something, obviously flea killer!

Since then, he has been itching and scratching like mad and we have even found a couple one on OH and one on the sofa. Is this normal for fleas to start jumping off a treated cat????

I have treated the house and hoovered too but feel like an absolute dirt bag!!

Any help gratefully received

Thanks

The vet probably used something like Frontline spray which kills the fleas but does make some come to the surface on the kitten and jump.

They should be dying and as you've treated your house then they definitely will when they hit the furniture etc. Unfortunately it is gross and you'll need to keep hovering in the next 24 hours.

    Good luck, remember this well

Thanks for the peace of mind that this is normal, the poor little thing we only got it yesterday and I just knew it wasn't wright. I think I will treat the front room again as that where they are bouncing off too. I don't know if I should have hoovered you know it didn't say to on the can, but I wanted to get the blighters up!!!!

WE FEEL GROSS!!!!!!! I can't imagine how the kitten must feel poor love x

What did you use to treat your front room? Most products will last 6-12 months so whenever a flea lands on a treated area it will die within that time.

We used Indorex spray but I only left it down about half hour before hoovering do you think it would still be effective? Also used it on wooden floor and bathroom tiles.......just in case!!!

Just looked it up as not familiar with that spray but it says just leave for half an hour so you should be fine.

Use it anywhere the kitten has been and anywhere you could have walked fleas too! They can sit in the treads of your shoes so carry round the house. Also spray cat carrier and your car if you think they could be in there!

All of the litter will probably have them and caught them from their mum. When we got our 2 cats they were riddled and couldn't believe the person we'd got them off had done nothing about them, her house must have been crawling ☹️

When we moved in here the previous owner had left us a gift of fleas. It was a nightmare time but apparently it is easier when you actually have animals that you are treating - ours get done every month as one of them is allergic to fleas. How the woman before us had let it get to the situation it was in I don't know - the bathroom carpet (why do people have carpets in their bathrooms - minging!) was jumping and once taken out never came back in. The other carpets were treated more thoroughly - time and time again. Since having our first cat we've only had one issue maybe two when we left a gap between treatments but as I say one of our mogs is allergic which has stopped that issue as we have to be really conscientious about treatment each month!

We got some special flea spray from the vet when we got kittens, worked much better than anything we bought in the shops We had to Frontline our kittens quite regularly when they first came to us
