"I think you have the wrong number"...

RachelHS, 5 November, 2008 at 16:41 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 11

Why do I say that?

They've just rung my phone and asked for someone that isn't me. Of course they have the wrong number. Why do I have to sound so uncertain about it?

Even worse is when I apologise to them. Why should I apologise for not being the person they want to speak to?

Anyone else do that?

These days I give them the number of the hotel they're actually trying to reach ?

I did have one guy insist that the phone book said that my number was the hotel's, no you're just not reading it properly.

I usually say "I'm afraid you've got the wrong number" - a matter of speach really, I'm not normally afraid of a wrong number!!

...what gets me is when they say, "are you sure?!" hmmmm let me think about that, did I get my husband's name right, am I who I really think I am!

For a while I did have a number that was someone else's in the Phone Book. No printing error - they had moved provider, BT had recycled the number - but still within the same edition of the phone book!

So I couldn't just say 'you have the wrong number' - because people would literally call back seconds later. And when I tried to explain the recycling bit - most people didn't get it. People seemed to assume I knew the previous owner, and would get quite funny about me not telling them the new number.

BT agreed to change it for free (they initially said no...) but I quite liked it, as it ended 0898 and I liked having my own '0898 number' ?

I usualy say I'm sorry, you have the wrong number. It's not that I care, I'm just being polite.

It is somewhat annoying when they then extend the conversation by asking "is this 123456" why ask me? Either you mis dialed in which case dial again and you will probably get it right or you have the wrong number and I can't help you.

That's the other thing isn't it? - people assume you know how to contact the person that they DID want! chances are they live miles away and you've never heard of them, but that doesn't always seem to compute!

I know what you mean, they offered us the same. My number ends 007 and when people read any combination of those 3 numbers they turn them into 007, but we like it, so we kept it

My Oh shocked me the other daay by having a right rant down the phone at this person who had phoned and asked for somebody who didnt live here.Turned out it was the 5th call in about 2 hours and was a call centre that kept ringing asking for some lady not known to us.

The amusing thing was it turned out he wanted a birminham number and we are brighton.Surely the dial codes are a lot different???

I cant help but giggle when i say 'i think you have the wrong number'they must think im taking the p**s lol

My mum's phone number (of 35 years) has just one digit different to a local taxi firm. That's always fun!

Apart from the drunken numpties, the old ladies calling to find out why the order for a taxi to take them to the dentist/doctor/chinese herbalist (well maybe not the last one ?) which they had left on our answering machine had not arrived were always interesting, not!

We have a five digit number and we get a lot of wrong numbers from people not fast enough with the last digit they mean to dial

I always say "sorry you have the wrong number" I'm sick of explaining it to people. This one woman called at least 4 times every saturday at 7am for a good few weeks before H told her to eff off and strangely we never heard from her again

    Yep, I do that too!

I wish I wasn't so nice because some calls I get sound like people chasing debts from someone who used to live here, so it probably sounds like I'm hiding something, which makes them push harder.

I also got into a lovely 2-calls-a-minute situation a couple of weeks ago with some woman who had obviously been given my number incorrectly and just wasn't getting it.

    Each call went something like:

    "Hello is that .......?"

"No, I think you have the wrong number."

"Oh dear, well the number I have is ................"

"Yes that is this number. You've been given the wrong one. This is not ......"

    "Oh, I am sorry"

    "No problem, Bye!"

After about the 6th call from her I had to just say "Please don't call this number again" and hang up. I felt bad, she was obviously old and her English wasn't great, but we could have gone on all day!
