Ice Cream - WWYD?

Liverbird, 6 January, 2011 at 12:25 Posted on Planning 0 8

I really want to have an ice cream trike at our wedding but having a bit of a dilemma where to fit it in and make it worth the money – it would cost us £270. Trouble is we’ve already arranged our catering: canapés with welcome drinks between 3-4pm, then a BBQ at 5pm followed by our wedding cake for dessert. Then in the evening about 9pm ish we’re having cheese, biscuits and chutney etc. Now we could have ice cream instead of canapés, but then that’s having something sweet before something savoury, which seems wrong to me. I don’t want to have both either, as I’d like to avoid too much wastage. I think 9pm is too late for people to want ice cream, which means the other options are either a) serve ice cream as dessert instead of the cake and put out the cake with the cheese and biscuits instead, or b) offer people an option of ice cream or cake as pud, or c) give up trying to justify ice cream and do without!

I’m leaning towards option a but then that’s an expensive cake if no-one eats it!

What would you do?

?

We are having a hog roast for our meal and have booked an ice cream trike for our dessert option...we will prob serve the cake (which wont be an expensive one) at the same time tbh so there is a choice..

the ice cream is served for 3 hrs with unlimited ice cream so think they will set up for about 7.30 (hog is at 6.30) and i really doubt anyone (maybe just the kids!) will be eating ice cream 3 hrs later...?.....

I really wanted to do this - but IMHO if you are going to serve Ice cream then it needs to be straight after the ceremony, just because Wine / Beer / Vodka + Ice cream isn't a great taste.

I don't think it's a problem to have Sweet then Savory, that's what we are doing but only because it's a reflection of our personalities - we ❤️ cake and so are having tea and cakes served at 5pm while we have our piccies done, before an evening buffet served at 7pm.

If I was a guest, I would prefer to have the icecream served as a desert choice but would probably choose cake as I don't like icecream - so guess I'm not much help really! But I definitely wouldn't want it straight after the ceremony otherwise it would spoil the main meal for me.

I like option a). One thing to consider is how many guests you have, and how long it would take for them all to get served ice cream at the cart. If it is a large wedding party, it might be worth including the cake with the dessert, so that as each table goes for icecream, the others still have yummy cake to tuck into!

Hmm, looking like ice cream as pud is quite popular then! Will probably end up serving the cake too, so people can have a choice (or both!) - after all, any leftover cake can always go on the buffet table later on and I could get some little boxes so people can take some home if they like too. Right, that's looking like a plan now, thank you all!

That's what I meant, I love cake and ice cream! I would have it but there is no freezer at the venue!

I went to a wedding where the ice cream trike was in use straight after the ceremony, along with champagne and some canapes. I doubt there was much in the way of wastage, it really depends how many canapes you have I should think. The ice cream was a hit, pretty much everyone loved it but the canapes certainly got grabbed as well.

I have no issue with sweet before savoury, but even if I did there was a long enough gap between ice cream and sit down meal I think...
