ideas needed - lots of flashes

Katscamel, 11 December, 2011 at 11:25 Posted on Planning 0 12

Ok ladies - ideas wanted please. Just over 8 months to go until lovely relaxed wedding in Zanzibar and am a bit short on ideas.

Ok so first things first - the dress - not me in it unfortunately and it's in a champagne/gold taffeta so light and airy enough not to die of the heat. Beads/sparkly bits at the top and I have to say with the alterations - lots and lots of supportive/hold in the wobbly bits stuff the whole thing is only costing me 225 pounds ?

The venue -

the dhow - a traditional boat we have a sunset cruise on

The reception venue

Ok so what do I need help with - firstly - flowers - I love flowers but unfortunately August isnt a great time for flowers and the Hibiscus I wanted won't be up to much so I was thinking of going for something like this - even it will need dusting after the wedding ☹️ I know I've already posted on this subject but am still not sure what I want to do. The venue itself will be fine - lots of bourganvilla - no good as a wedding bouqet though unless I carry them in a vase as they wilt very quickly. The lady who makes the crystal bouquet has already emailed me with some ideas of the beads etc she can use.

Jewellery - as I said there's a bit of beading on the dress but need to have something else - and of course a tiara. Have tried a few things on and with my crap hair need something with some height as otherwise it just doesn't show. Have no idea what I'll actually do with my hair but have a good hairdresser so hopefully she can come up with something. Again if anyone has ideas for very thick wavyish bottom of neck medusa style hair styles then please flash.

Shoes - need to be practical as there will be uneven steps, a climb down to the dhow and then the party on the beach - so was thinking of something like these.

Any other ideas - colour theme is turquoise and fushia if that helps. Thanks Smiley smile

If you really have your heart set on Hibiscus you could have artificial ones in your bouquet mixed with fresh frangipani and foliage.

Ooops actually meant frangipani - hibiscus are nice but wilt quite quickly and wrong colour - they're all red ones in Zanz.

What a perfect setting! I wonder if I was right to dsmiss OH's idea to get married on the carribean...

My thought is that I would go for shoes that also tie round the ankle if I had to go up and down steps and get into a boat.. Mules are just as bad as flip flops at causing accidents. As I can't flash, this link shows a lot of shoes with buclkes around the ankle. http://www.elegantsteps.co.uk/categories/Wedding-Shoes-by-Heel-Height/Up-to-2-inches/

These aren't colourful but you can have a lot of them dyed.

Can you ask your venue/hotel if they can arrange a bouquet from a local florist using local flowers? That way you are bringing something more of Zanzibar into your wedding. Perhaps you can request certain colours? You could then have some flowers at your meal to tie that together.

    Hi there,

If you are not 100% sure on your hair something like the Glamour Puss hair band below is really versatile and would suit the hairstyle you mention, as well as many other styles.

If you'd like some more ideas, my website is

Oooh - I went to Zanzibar for my honeymoon. It is a really beautiful island. Great choice! Thought your might like some things on things to see there:

I loved going to visit the dolphins, it was stunning and the first time I had seen any. I also really enjoyed the traditional boat rides. Many locals will happily take you out for the da and can sometimes provide a better tour than the ones organised by the hotels. They are also good value. Some will arrange for a picnic and drinks too. We shared a boat with 3 other couples and went snorking too. It was reasonably priced and really good fun.

The very northern tip of the Island is beautiful, and there is a large rasta community up there who run amazing beach bars. (Kendwa Rocks)

Stone town can be quite hectic, and I would only stick around for a day visit, as I find haggling and all the hustle and busstle a bit much (but that might be your cup of tea!)

Enjoy - it is a beautiful place!

Sorry, I can't really help with your questions but do you mind if I ask where you are getting your dress from?

NathalieSB - I know Zanzibar well as I actially live in Dar es Salaam - so a 20 minute flight and I'm there Smiley smile Stone Town is a fab place - certainly not hectic - getting lost in the back streets is my favourite way to spend the day. I know Kendwa- first time I ever went - a few years ago stayed at Sunset.

Sqidgybob )love the name) - the dress is from a fab shop in Folkestone called Pumpkins and Dragonflies - it's actually a bridesmaids dress. Don't know where in the country you are but it's from the phoenix range - http://phoenixgowns.co.uk/stockists.html. I couldn't justify spending loads on a 'normal' dress.

Lucieloulabelle/Sherrie - http://www.artificialweddingbouquets.com.au - I know it'san Australian site but did provide mw with inspiration.

Thanks Katscamel! It's exactly what I am looking for, seen one very similar for £900 and was looking for a cheaper version. I'm in Medway so not too far from Folkestone, I'll check it out!

    Thanks Smiley smile

EDIT: Just checked the website and they have a stockist in Chatham, even better! I can see the shop from my bedroom window!
