Idiot wrong numbers...

Puss, 11 September, 2008 at 12:49 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 19

Just had a wrong number looking for the a local taxi firm. We are one digit off their number so it happens a lot (and is really annoying generally). Today's conversation went like this:

Me: Hello

Him: Is this the taxi company

me: no, sorry you have the wrong number

Him: No I don't, I got it right I know I did

Me: Erm, no you didn't because this is a private number

Him: [grumble grumble] and hangs up.

I just love the fact that he denied the wrong number ?. Numpty.

I'm amazed by the number of messages I get on my answerphone asking for/cancelling appointments at a local health clinic, when my answerphone message is very clearly a personal one and I don't know any clinics which operate on that basis anyway. Sometimes I think maybe I should call the clinic to tell them "So-and-so's cancelling their three o'clock". ?

    Sympathy!

Our number was temporarily the number of the chairman of the local RSPCA and she takes over their office calls when (as seems to frequently happen) their admin people quit.

Now I know who the people are trying to reach, I don't mind passing the correct number on but for a while we got bizarre answer phone messages from the public and RSPCA inspectors telling us that people would be dropping aggressive dogs off later that day and could we come and rescue three puppies....

    Arrrrrgh! Cat Says No! ?

I'm currently trying to track down the pillock who has diverted their number to me. Completely different department, their number is a public number and their online directory entry is incomplete. Git.

Ours is 1 digit away from the golf club - people get very snotty when we aren't them!

And they often say 'are you sure'. Just a moment, hang on, oh yes I am the golf club today!?

I was abroad last week and my mobile rang

    Him: Is that Shell?

Me: No sorry, you have the wrong number

Him: Oh well do you know how I get a line out of the hotel?

Me: Umm bearing in mind I've no idea who you are or indeed where you are probably not

Him: Oh, well can you put me through to reception then!!

    WTF?

I used to have an 0845 number which was one digit off the Red Cross in Leicester. I had endless confused old dears phoning me up for commodes and zimmer frames.

We ahve a 5 digit number so if you aren't quite quick enough with your last digit you get us, we have this batty woman who calls for linda on a regular basis at 6.30am on a saturday or last at night week nights

One morning she repeatedly called us 6 times in a row and insisted that she had dialled right, I begged to differ and she accused me of being a burgalar at Lindas (even though she'd spoken to me the last saturday aswell) and threatened to call the police, I hung up, wonder if she did?

I had that when I lived in Guildford. We used to get calls for the Guildford Law College. One chap just couldn't get through at all, so I told him to call the operator and ask to be put through. The operator called us and asked us all sorts of dumb questions, as she couldn't understand why the call was getting routed to the wrong number.

I had a woman ring me a couple of years back: Woman: 'Is that Amanda?' Me: 'No, you have the wrong number' Woman: 'No I haven't, that is my daughters phone' Me: 'No this is my phone and has been for some time' Woman: 'No it is my daughters phone, reads out number....' Me: 'That isn't the number you dialled' Woman: click...... I also had a woman ring and ask for my mum when I was at home once, I said she wasn't in and she started chatting away to me. It was about 5 minutes before she said something about my mum which I didn't recongnise and realised she had the wrong number!

My last number had previously been a plumbers and I used to get calls asking for him to sort out their boiler. One morning about 7.30 I got a call from a distraught woman who had a burst pipe. It was quite difficult explaining that they had the *right* number but it wasn't the plumbers any more. Oh, and I got messages left from the school the plumbers child(ren) went to - one telling me that their child had been taken to A&E.

I recently rang a colleauge at 8.00 on a friday morning and chatted for about 5 minutes about QPR before realising it wasn't my brother. Colleague was a bit confused but, as we normally talk football, just went along with it.

And, about 10 mins ago, I wanted to call a chauffeur company but mis-dialled and the girl answering said 'you have completely the wrong number'. How did she know? It might have been almost right.

My number is one digit away from a local supermarket. I dread the calls at 7:30 on a Saturday morning from hungover teenagers claiming they've got the flu.

We had one where a girl rang up and wanted me to take her shift because she couldn't do it. Even after I told her it was the wrong number, she still was wanting me to take her shift. I had to hang up on her in the end.
