If you had an extra £1000....

Flamin Nora, 12 April, 2013 at 19:49 Posted on Planning 0 32

What would you buy?

Or would you save it?

We have just come to an extra £1000 with just under 4 months to go.

Although my head says 'save it' my heart is saying VOG! It was the first thing that got axed and I'd love one.

What would you do? If you would spend it, what on??

I'm the same VOG or towards honeymoon. Weigh it up against any other alternatives, but your gut instinct is usually right.

If we had an extra £1000 I would love to hire my OH a wonderful car (Aston Martin or similar) to drive to the venue in. Then the rest on honeymoon / spending money!!

Personally I'd save it - but that's because I don't think a lot of money should be spent on a wedding day (sorry if I cause offense!) Funnily enough, my Grandad just gave me £1037 (early inheritance) and I've invested it all in premium bonds Smiley smile

A groom's cake. He is a right cake muncher and has been brilliantly selfless so far. We're also having a budget do in the uk when we get back so I'd stick some money behind the bar for that

Am I being really dumb, what is a vog? Lol

I would spend it a proper dj, as we are just doing it ourselves and the rest on honeymoon!

We are already providing food and wine on the tables for the guests, so I think that's enough.

Bit selfish I know, lol. but we have spent a lot on the day itself as it is!

If it were me, I would put it behind the bar.

But as you wanted a Vog, I say that ?

If I'm honest I'd probably save it. We're on track with our budget and have allocated for pretty much everything we wanted (albeit some of it we're making and I'm always on the lookout for bargains). Maybe as we get closer things will crop up and there will be last minute panics.

If I had £1000 to spend only on the wedding then I think it'd be either the honeymoon or a vog.

If I'm completely honest, I would say that if we received a cheque in the post for £1000, we would not book anything extra, nor would we change anything we've already booked. We're not spending all our extra cash on the wedding, so it's not like we're at the absolute limit. We probably could have spent more if we wanted to, but picked and chose things that were worthwhile to us and wouldn't have our wedding any other way. So, that £1k would go in the bank, and perhaps into investments - but Ant deals with money, not me (I'm a disaster with finances).

I think gowith your heart on this one. You had obviously originally wanted a vog but axed it- was that due to expected budget restraints? I know £1000 is a lot of money, but it can be acquired some other time. Your wedding is a one off. How do you think you would feel if you saved the money? Would you look back in months or years to come and regret not having footage of your big day?

If I was in your situation, it would be a no brained to me- get the one thing I thought was out of my reach.

I'd stick it behind the bar. We're not doing a terribly traditional do, and her father keeps nagging us to let us do an open bar. But they're a fairly conservative American family, and I'm terrified to let them see the havoc my Glaswegian family can wreak on an open bar. £1000 would be a nice compromise between what we've got and an open bar.

Either that, or hiring a photographer for longer, hiring a band instead of a DJ, and having a photobooth in the evening. Anything to make memories!

Oh right! I most certainly would not want a videographer!

It's bad enough having to say our vows in front if a bunch of people in the first place, let alone having to watch it and re-live it!

Photos I can just about handle

Definitely the videographer. Although it's a nice touch, putting money behind the bar won't make for a significantly better day than if you didn't, but I think that you will cherish a video for many years to come (and so will your children, grandchildren, etc.). For me, that is what is important, not how drunk we can make everybody! And at the end of the day, it is about you, so you should do what makes you happy.

This has just happened to me! Unexpected bonus from work!!!

We're puttining it towards our honeymoon as we are on track with spends for the wedding itself but the honeymoon was a real extravagance so I feel less guilty about it now!

Either behind the bar or upgrade the buffet and add more canape's.

I'm all about the food and drink!

If I didn't have a VOG I'd definitely have gone for that. However, since I do, I'd either put it towards our honeymoon or put it behind the bar.....

No contest, if you haven't already booked a VOG then you've got enough for a decent one and it will be your best investment of the whole day. You'll cherish it forever. Call me biased, but I hear the results AFTER the big day and that's what all the brides say then.

We were planning on paying for our wedding ourselves, but our in-laws have offered a bit of extra cash - it's going on the honeymoon for us!

Thank you for everyone that commented.

We decided to be semi frivolous - put half to upgrade to a suite on honeymoon and saved half for a rainy day.

Funny enough I was doing wedding photography when I got married so didnt have a video but it's a regret we've got to live with. Wedding films come into there own later down the line when its time to look back.
