If you hire something and it doesn't work perfectly...

You expect a discount to take this into account, if not a full refund, yes?

We hired a printer for an event, the printer was excellent but had a fault. This wasted paper, time and meant we couldn't print as we wanted. My view is therefore that we are due a discount. H is doubtful on this, he said to me 'well, you can see what they say but they may not offer anything'. I don't get this. They are in the business of hiring/selling expensive printers. We are in the business of hiring and maybe buying one, You'd expect a discount, right?

    I'd definitely either expect a partial refund or discount voucher to be used in the future along with their assurance that they'd check the printer and the rest of the stock of the same model for the same fault and repair them.

    I'd calculate what % the printer wasn't used for its intended purpose and ask for that as the refund/discount.

    I'm with you, and on the odd times that something similar has happened to us we've always been offered one or the other

    Absolutely agree with you. You've lost out on time and materials, so a discount at the very least.
