If you've any spare prayers.....UPDATE

KJB, 23 February, 2009 at 21:47 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 38

Just to update those who asked last week. My friends' 11 month old son is doing better than he was and they are now confident he'll make it....but until he comes off the drugs which are making him sleepy, they won't be able to assess any long term effects. They're weaning him off some of them now but he'll be sleepy for another week probably.

He's waiting for a bed on the renal unit, and as soon as one becomes free he'll be moved from the baby ICU. He's still on dialysis but has changed machines from a large one through his neck to a smaller one through his tummy which will hopefully make him a bit more comfortable. At the moment they're thinking he'll be on the dialysis for another month at least.

The downside to moving away from the ICU is that only my friend or her husband can stay with him overnight, rather than both of them.....but I guess this is a small price to pay for knowing his life isn't in the balance any more.

So , it's positive news, but still very much one step at a time and there is still a very long way to go.

Thanks again to everyone for your prayers, positive vibes or hippy dances (whatever you chose)

KJB

***********************************

...could you please send them to my friends and their 11 month old baby. He's been in hospital for a week and news has been sketchy, but I found out tonight that it's bacterial meningitis, septacaemia and pneumonia. The poor wee chap nearly died on Wednesday. He's now been transferred to a specialist intensive care baby unit and is thankfully making some progress and managed to come off the ventilator today.

I feel so helpless. And this friend was sooo wonderful for me when I needed her...she always knew what to say (or more importantly, what not to say) - but I can't start to imagine what her and her husband are going through.

So any prayers, positive vibes, hippy dances or whatever you believe in, if they're going spare can you send them in their direction.

This may seem a bit random asking for people who you don't know, and I hope this doesn't offend anyone, but I know Hitched is really good at things like this. And at least it feels like I'm doing something. I've already phoned my Mum and added them to their church prayer list.

Thank you

KJB

How awful, poor little chap. I'll send some positive vibes their way.

I think we all know how terrible it is to feel helpless when something bad is happening to those we care about. I don't think you need to explain or apologise ?

My little girl had septacaemia at 3 days old & it was truly terrifying. To be honest there is nothing anyone can say or do but I'm sure your friend appreciates knowing you're there if she needs you.

My daughter made a full recovery despite some very touch & go moments- it's amazing how they suddenly bounce back.

Sending every positive vibe I can muster ?

Thanks everyone. My friend just sent me a text to make sure I was OK as she knows I hate talking about hospitals. Even now she's checking I'm OK - that's the sort of wonderful friend she is! Hopefully the next update will be more progress in the right direction but I think it'll be a long old haul from here.

Huge positive vibes to your friend and her baby ?

My friend's baby was on life support at 6mths due to a particularly nasty strain of chicken pox. Despite the threat of brain damage, she came through and is a beautiful, robust and bright 3 year old.

I hope and pray for the same for your friend's little one.

My thoughts are with your friend and her family.

If its of any help, id say coming off the ventilator is a huge step in the right direction. Im an ITU nurse, and we generally dont take them off the vent until they are well on the right road.

(Think there is alot of misconception about ventilators. Children/people do not just go on them because they cannot breathe for themselves, but more to give them the chance to kinda conserve the energy they'd use to breathe to help them recover in other areas)

The fact he's off the vent, should mean that he is recovering in other areas.

    My thoughts are with them.

Please update us, if that ok?

Thanks everyone, and that's good to know Loopyloo. Hopefully he'll be strong enough to come off the dialysis soon too. I'll update as and when I know more but it most likely won't be for a few days now.
