I'm 36 and have just done something I've never done before

WelshTotty, 24 August, 2009 at 19:52 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 44

I've just eaten fish and chips from a chipshop!

The thread about the cost of fish and chips came to my mind when Mr WT said he was going to go to the chippy. I thought I'd bite the bullet and go for it, I asked him to get me fish and chips (with a back up rissole just in case I didn't like it) So he bought a medium cod in batter and we shared it.

It was a tentative first mouthful but it was quite nice, I think my main fear is bones. I remember being force fed fish in batter in primary school which was horrible and full of bones. I really do think that's what put me off fish for life. Cod is ok as it's not a fishy fish (I've tried salmon and I just can't deal with it it's too fishy!)

So I now have a new food in my life, battered cod from the chippy. I might have another one in 6 months time maybe!

    I like it!

I had fish and chips on the beach this weekend and they were luvverly.... I like lots of vinegar on my fish

Salmon is def too fishy for me - I'm a white fish girl for sure. I'm trying to broaden my fish eating horizons and was reading about Tilapia; I plan to try that soon

Lol MJ, it cost £3.50. £2.50 for the fish and £1 for the chips!

Not a bone in sight thank goodness so all was ok!

Well done! I love chippy fish and chips, with mushy peas too.

I tried a miniscule amount of steak at the weekend (and have photographic evidence!) I won't be doing it again though.

<dribbles> I became vegetarian three years ago (almost to the day) and the only thing I am still tempted by is fish and chips from the chippy.

Tilapia is lovely as is Mahi Mahi. Both white fish like cod/haddock.

I've been eating fish from the chippy my whole life and have never once found a bone. If your chippy is any good you shouldn't do.

WT, if your chippy does it, try haddock next time. Tastier than cod IMO.

You've made me want a fish now and my local is closed now and closed all day on a Tuesday ? May have to go for Wednesday lunch...

What's a rissole? I'm fairly sure I know what it is but it just doesn't come to mind at the moment - when you say i'll probably go 'oh yeah, course it is'.

I really really want to try monkfish, I ought to buy some but i'm scared it'll be mega expensive, we're on a tight budget. Oh and I'd love to try lobster but again, am put off when the menu says MP. If you've gotta ask you can't afford it ?

A rissole is a round thing that consists of potato, onion herbs and corned beef in a ball rolled in breadcrumbs and fried

I was also inspired by that thread and had the first fish and chips in over a year today, on Porthcawl seafront ?

2 x cod, one large chips and one regular, came to £10.30

Rissole is a weird concoction of corned beef, onions and potatoes, covered in breadcrumbs and deep fried. They ming. I thought they were peculiar to S Wales though, as I never heard of them till I moved here (from Mid Wales ?)

Ah, that's a shame, I ❤️ haddock from our local chippy and would never buy cod out of choice.

If you're not a fishy person you should try swordfish. Much meatier than most fish. Quite salty and perfectly delicious.

Mel I really wished I could try more fish, especially as some menu choices sound wonderful but Im too scared to order it in case I dont like the fish involved cos its an expensive thing to throw away!

Nope, it seems I didn't know what they were. Like a rolled up corned beef hash concoction by the sounds of it.

I understand completely. I'm a really fussy eater and am always scared of trying new things when out, but I tried swordfish on holiday when there was literally nothing else on the menu I could face and it was delicious. Like I said, it's meatier than normal fish in both taste and texture. Giveit a go if you get the chance.

I agree with Deif, I think its a S Wales thing is a rissole. I remember as a kid staying in Bournemouth with my aunt and uncle and going to the chippy and asking for rissole and chips, they had no idea what on earth I was talking about lol

WT: fish? After everything you said on the fish and chips thread?? Brilliant - go girl ?. That thread had a lot to answer for: we had fish and chips that very evening (and then a lot of beer!)

My mum used to make me turkey rissoles at christmas. I'm sure they're not the same thing but they were fab: cooked turkey minced up with onion then fried in egg... I don't like roast turkey but I loved the rissoles :o)

For all you cod eaters....please can you consider switching to haddock or another fish on the menu as cod is so desperately endangered. Haddock is a much meatier, tastier fish anyway.

I can't remember the last time I had cod & chips from the chippy - we usually have haddock or plaice.

How deliciously suggestible some of you are.... bacon butty anyone? ?

My local chippy has started selling pollack as well as haddock and cod. I remember my dad fishing for ling when I was little and I liked that, very similar to cod as I recall - you don't seem to see ling in shops though

But I cant eat haddock its too fishy!

Anyway our chippy only does cod and haddock so theres really now only 1 option for me. I do like plaice and sole though but the chippy doesnt do that.

Can I second Alison76? At risk of sounding sanctimonious some of the regular chippy fish are very endangered indeed and lots of common restaurant fish (inc swordfish, sea bass and monkfish) are both endangered and caught using pretty awful methods.

Marine Conservation's website www.fishonline.org has some really good lists of fish to eat/avoid.

I haven't eaten fish for 5 years or so for ethical reasons and also because H and I used to do a lot of diving and it seemed a bit mean to go and look at all the pretty fish and then tuck into a big plate of grouper.

My H proposed to me with a fillet of ling - it was our engagement ling [absolutely true fact icon needed].He'd ordered it online, but even so there aren't many companies that sell it. We ate fishcakes and fish pie for a fortnight, but it was very tasty!

Do they not farm cod these days? I know that the stocks of the wild stuff are pretty low and strict quotas are in place but surely some of it is from farms? Or am I being thick?
