I'm a newbie... Hello ladies

LVDM, 21 April, 2013 at 02:01 Posted on Planning 0 7

Hi ladies, I am a newbie here and thought I'd write my first post.

We are from North East England but live in South Australia and we are booking our Wedding for next May somewhere in the Lake District ?

We have my parents who are helping book things, going to check out the venue etc which is fab for us, plus we know the Lakes and know pretty much what to expect. We may have a small ceremony when we're back in Oz too.

I am just wondering, I was reading a thread on Registrars, giving notice etc. What does the givinign notice entail and can we do it from over here? We won't be in England until about 10 days before the Wedding but I'm sure you have to give notice way before that??

I'm going to start dress shopping in July when my parents are here on holiday, only having 1 bridesmaid and two flower girls (will buy the flowergirl dresses in England) so am hoping to find my dress pretty much within two weeks only 10 months in advance - eeeeeeek.... hope that's giving me enough time.

Love reading all your advice and tips, feel a little isolated from my friends living 12,000 miles away so is nice to read helpful hints on here.

Anyway have probably bored you all by now.

L xx

    Hi and welcome!!

You give notice in the borough you are currently living in, so that would be where you are now. Best thing to do is check and put your worries at rest, ring the register office in the lakes and see what they think and ring your local register office in Oz and check it correlates. I'm sure registrars (especially one in the lakes) will have experienced this before and know what they're doing.

Giving notice entails providing documents (passport, proof of address etc), giving the registrar all the details and them putting up a notice for marriage for you two for 3 weeks, that's as far as I know.

Ahh good to hear hitched is helping out, it's good like that! Let us know if any of us can help.

When are you wanting to have your wedding?

Hello and welcome. Are you worried that you have to be present?

Hi ladies, yes I was thinking do we need to be present to give notice, I will try and ring the Registrar today.

We are hoping to get married on 25th May 2014. I can plan most things from here and will have to buy my dress here (probably for twice the cost of buying it in UK due to crazy costs here) my Daughters BM dress well we may get some shipped over from England if I don't see any I like here or if the cost is ridiculous.

You have to give notice in person, I believe you also have to be resident at an address in the borough you give notice in for at least 14 days, you have to bring 2 proof of address when you give notice.

    hello and welcome to hitched

    Welcome!

I'm giving notice next week (I live on an Island and we are getting married in England). You have to be resident in the UK for 7 full days, you cannot include the day you arrive and you do it on the 8th day (the day after your full 7th day, sure your not dozy but it took me a while to get my head round! ha!). There is a charge of £35 per person for where we are giving notice and we are not giving notice in the same borough as we intend to marry. When you have booked you date with the Registrar they should send you some docs which will say you need to give notice within I think 2 months, however I just rang and said I wouldn't be able to do it until x date and they were fine with that.

    Hope that helps!

    xx
