Im engaged! please help with my planning!

Ive just got engaged and am so excited!! Have been with my fella for a few years and although we have talked about getting married in the past, he still surprised me with the proposal, he is not the most romantic person usually, but he took me away to a spa hotel and we had an amazing time!

We are looking at getting married spring/summer 2010 but i dont really have a clue where to start with the planning! HELP! As i am in the wedding business thought i would be all organised but i realise there is so much to do and not sure where to start, what needs to be done first etc!! I guess the first things to do is pick the colours and theme etc so everything can be done around that but its so hard to choose! Is there anything else we should be looking at at these early stages? Maybe venues? Does anyone have a big list of everything we might need to look into/book as im sure we will forget something!!!!!! Im really pleased with how involved he seems with organising everything at the moment, hope it lasts!

    Aw - congratulations Sarah!

    You'll get lists posted Im sure, but I would agree with you that venue is the most important thing, for 2010 they will already be getting booked up! What sort of wedding you going for? Church, Venue?

    How exciting! And then yes, theme - as that wil (if you want to 'theme' stuff anyhow!) dictate to a point everything on the visual side....

    Im a 2010 bride2be - living in kent and getting married in April 2010. I booked my venues first and did that a year ago - then the colour was the next theing - we aren't having a theme as such. After that we just booked stuff as we saw someone we liked and could afford it - now have photo man and DJ confirmed as well. Where in the country are you? There is a post for 2010 brides - the original poster will add you to the list so you can see if you have a date twin when you find a date - there are quite a few of us now - i will bounce the list for you x

    Hello and Congratualtions!

    Yes I agree venue is the first major thing to book and I think the photographer too - they seem to get booked pretty quickly especially if you are getting married on a Sat. As for colours .... well we still haven't decided 100% and we get married in May next year. I think that is pretty much dictated by what the bridesmaid wears and it depends on what suits her/them. We have a few colours in mind and will go with whatever looks best.

    Thanks to everyone for your help so far, i know i will get loads of great advice on here! its all very daunting at the moment with so much to look into! I think we would like to get a registrar out to a venue and have the whole day in one place, we looked around the hotel we stayed in where we got engaged as a possible one as they do weddings there but obviously need to look at more before we decide! I live in northampton so looking at anything that kind of area really, my friends got married at Fawsley Hall earlier this year which was lovely but out of our price range! Anything around Northampton / Daventry ? Northamptonshire etc really would be great, we would like somewhere with outdoor space too for possibly having a marquee as we both have quite large families! If anyone knows of anyone that might be good to look at that would be great!

    My sister lives near Northampton, which is only about 30 miles away from me and I think this place looks lovely!!

    Congratulations and welcome to hitched. I'm another Summer 2010 bride 2 be. The first thing we did was decide on a date and then book the venue. We have also booked the photographer.

    Have you looked at Highgate House, Cranford Hall has a marquee, Kelmarsh Hall, Kilworth House, Rushton Hall is lovely (we do a lot of work there), Lime Trees Hotel, Rockingham Castle, Marriott at Eagle Drive.

    As a fellow Northants business owner, just email us if you want recommendations. Obviously there is the one and only Hockleys for cakes!

    Arrive in Style for cars, chair covers etc.

    And of course whilst I can't supply you Envelopments as a business, I can for your own wedding!

    Hey there! Congrats! I'd echo what other people have already said. Venue first and foremost. If you do a rough guest list to give yourself an idea of numbers, that will help. No point in booking something too small!

    Also photographers get booked up really fast, so that should probably be next on your list.

    Thank you everyone for the messages ?

    We are having a look round Marriott Eagle Drive tomorrow (thanks Jonicko for all the suggestions! Hadnt even thought of half of them!!)

    Ali, again great idea to write the guest list first for numbers!!! ? silly me! Think i am going to need a lot of help the way i am going!!
