Do you have any family/ friends in the area that you could trust to find places/things for you.

Or how about employing a wedding planner in that area.

Good luck, Whens the wedding? x

I take it you don't have family in the area you can stay with for weekends?

I got married about 100 miles away (near my parents). I used yell.com and google to start looking for suppliers in the area but having flicked through the Yellow Pages since I think it also would have been useful to have a copy of the YP for the area as not everyone is online.

We would organise weddingy weekends when we would travel up on a Fri night and spend all of Sat/some of Sun in appointments with suppliers, although at this time of year you might find it difficult to get a Saturday appointment with wedding people.

I got several of my suppliers through recommendations from other suppliers. For example, my venue had a DJ contact they liked as he knew the acoustics of the room. My dress maker gave me the number of a brilliant make up artist and in turn the make up artist provided me with a hairdresser ... my photographer suggested a specific car hire place ... a lot of them get to know each other so it's worth asking them if they know anyone.

We do have family up there, but I wanna do as much as I can myself, (can't afford a wedding planner)

I cant go up at weekends as I work full time, and never get 2 days off at a time, and work weekends. The wedding is June 2010 and we are going up for a week in october to speak with the venue co-ordinator, who has recommended a dj. We will probably go up again for a week in March.

I'm just worried that it may be too soon to look for a stylist, and if I leave it too late they may already be booked up.

The good news is that my wedding dress is sorted and paid for!!

    Thanx for the tips xx

I'm getting married in Greece, then having my reception back near my parents. I just booked a few days off work to make a long weekend and did it that way.

I'd say work on recommendations from venues / family friends as well.

Where abouts are you getting married? maybe us Hitchers have some recommendations!?

    Hi Max,

I'm getting married about 100 miles from home in May next year. It's a bit different to 250miles yes, but alot of what I have done already has been over the internet.

I have actually found that there is little difference in price for alot of services eg. photographer & cars, which are closer to home. In fact they can be cheaper, even though they have to travel a big distance. Just don't rule out looking around plenty & not just in the area you are to be married in. Concentrate on things like flowers, hair, makeup which need to be closer to the venue while you are visiting.

Also, I would say that most salons would have some weddings in their books from at least a year in advance, I'm sure it wouldn't be a problem to look for someone in October.

    HTH x

I live on the Isle of Wight, and I'm getting married at Old Trafford, we will be going up there a couple of days in advance to get the little things sorted, but I'm worried about the cake, flowers and hairstyles, my 3 bridesmaids are dotted around the country so if I have a hair trial in oct, they wont be able to get there, does it matter about a trial for them?

One of my BM has just found out she is pregnant too, so I'm panicking about their dresses!

I thought I was super organise (with my pink wedding file!) but I'm not really!!

    Hi Max

I would suggest that you put another thread on here to start with asking for recommendations from brides in the Manchester area. See who they've used, and what they would recommend. So much now is done on the internet anyway.

For hair trials, I have to say I didn't bother for the bridesmaids - do they have to have their hair the same anyway? Perhaps just treat them all to a gorgeous full blowdry on the day and their hair will look fab!

As for dresses, when is the baby due? Is it anywhere near the wedding?

Edited to add - Just seen that the wedding isn't until June next year. You wouldn't even need to THINK about ordering bridesmaid dresses until after she's had the baby - most BM dresses are on a 4 month lead time.

    Hiya!

I know they dont take half as long, but I was gonna get them from somewhere like Coast, or Monsoon. I dont wanna leave it til next year incase i dont see anything I like, I want summer dresses, but this time next year will be too late. The baby is due in oct so i have told her she has plenty of time to get back into shape!!

I looked into OT as well! Would love to see pics after the event! (sorry, that doesn't really help you at all but am jealous you're getting married there!!). Was actually v impressed with their brochure, was really in depth.

I would go with the suggestion of posting a thread for the attention of Manchester based brides and seeing if they can help at all.

    Hiya,

I live in swansea and am getting married in Gloucester.

It has been tricky organising things but what I tend to do is make appointments with different suppliers on the same date so reduce travelling too much.

Or when we've had a meeting with the wedding co-ordinator at our venue I've asked suppliers to meet us there. That has helped greatly.

We sometimes make a weekend of it and stay overnight in the area.

The biggest problem was finding a person to do hair and makeup as not many would travel to swansea to do the trial. I have found a really lovely lady now and that was through constantly searching on the internet.

Have sometimes thought why did I pick somewhere an 1hr and a half from where I live but then I see our venue and forgot all the difficulites I've experienced.

    Hope this has helped

Its more common than you think!

A lot of people get married miles from where they live for one reason or another.

I'm a photographer, but I also work closely with a number of other creatives, including hair and makeup and videographers.

If you like, I can recommend everyone, and supply us altogether as a team. I'm also happy to meet you and discuss all the details, and at the same time the MUA / hair girl or girls can come over to do the trail for you.
