Immigration visiting prison - why??

Mrs S Smith, 23 September, 2008 at 17:23 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 1

Hi all,

My brother got a visit from immigration yesterday.. He got a letter a few days back, telling him they'd visit, but there wasn't really any information enclosed as to why. When they turned up, they stayed for about 45mins-1hr and just sat and chatted to A.

Why would they do this? Just seems like a waste of time to me. A is a Swedish citizen, living in UK, same as my folks and I. We've never had a visit from immigration at all, no interviews, etc, since we're part of the EU and EEC and whatever else.

The only thing that springs to mind is, maybe they are considering moving A to a Cat D prison, where he could be eligible for day release? Could that be it? Previously he's been told that he can't get into a Cat D prison because he's a foreigner. He's also applied for tagging several times, which has been rejected each time but that's another matter.

Just curious, really. Nobody can provide us with answers to questions, because the only one we COULD get in touch with is A's solicitor, who is, frankly, useless.

?

ETA- leaving work in a minute and won't be able to come online again tonight til gone about 8.30pm or so, so thanks in advance for any replies!

Although he is an EU citizen he can still be deported or adminstratively removed - depends on the sentence details. They were probably interviewing him as part of their investigations. They wouldn't normally interview someone about their D cat, it would be the prison's decision (although they would take into account what Immigration say). Best thing he can do is ask someone there, most prisons have an officer who specialises in this area. There are also solicitors who specialise in Immigration law so they may be more helpful (and informed) than normal solicitors. Hope that helps
