In search of a pearl necklace...

Arquard, 24 August, 2010 at 14:52 Posted on Planning 0 21

I *did* have a faux pearl necklace sorted from a place on eBay, and it arrived today but it was a real disappointment. I wasn't expecting much for a tenner, but it was really flimsily made, the beads were A LOT smaller than they looked on the picture and it took precisely 20 seconds of my daughter getting her hands on it before it fell to pieces. Still, I did realise that I really like the look of the simple pearl necklace though, so now I can get on with finding a good quality one.

Where do I start though?? I know NOTHING about pearls. It took long enough for me to figure out diamonds when we were ER shopping!!

This is the style I like, but I'd maybe also like something with a bit of sparkle in it. I dunno. Where to begin???

This is a very random reply but worth a try...

...Do you know anyone who's going to Tenerife anytime soon?

They do beautiful pearls - my moms hubby bought her some on their honeymoon there and OH bought me some when we went recently.

The prices are a lot lower and you can see the quality.

I'm sure some of the HIBs will be along soon. PG has some lovely pearl necklaces. Also, if you're in MK John Lewis have nice simulated pearl necklaces.

I got some real pearl earrings for me and the BMs from Mai Pearls - lovely stuff and it's the pearls are all ethically sourced.

How do faux pearls compare to the real thing? I imagine you must be able to get some very realistic ones, which the ones I had today sadly weren't. What the shizzle with sourcing real pearls? Like I say I know nothing about them!!

I'd love to talk to some HIBs!

Thanks Jayne. I really like the look of the second one. Would it be possible to do something like that but with the pearls and crystals the same size?

These are a bit more expensive (£308 according to website) I think but I have something similar in a bracelet (which was only £35) and it's lovely! It's oriental pearl in bluewater....not sure if you're close enough to have a look there but they have a website and you never know a HIB might make something simliar (for cheaper hopefully!!!)

The HIB's on here are very helpful and can give you some great advice on what style would look best with your dress. I've had items from both Lisaloulou and PG (I'm greedy) and they were great quality.

    Hiya,

Sorry to hear about your ebay disappointment. ☹️

Take a little look at my website below. I'd be pleased to make you a necklace using high quality swarovski pearls which are gorgeous or freshwater which are also lovely but a little more expensive. You can always add in a little sparkle with swarovski crystals, silver crystal encrusted rondelles like the photo a previous poster showed you or with silver crystal encrusted balls. I'm just assuming you are having silver, gold can also be done!

Here are a few photographs below of designs on my website just to give you a few ideas but I am happy to work around your preferred design above, it's lovely!

Any aspects you like in these designs could be added to a pearl necklace for you. Swarovski pearls are available in various shades and sizes. I could make a pearl necklace like the one you've posted a photo of and simply add in bicone or round crystals like those shown above. Crystals are available in various colours and sizes so you could always have small ones to add just a little touch of sparkle.

Anyway, I hope that helps a bit!! If you have any queries whatsoever, just let me know at ****@*********************.***

I can do strands of pearls - faux or freshwater. For a strand it'd be between £20-40 at a guess, depending on the final materials and design.

You can view some of my work at www.poppysparkles.co.uk and there are some photos on FB at www.facebook.com/poppysparkles

Feel free to email me at viv [at] poppysparkles.co.uk (use @ sign instead of [at])

    Hi,

My glass pearl necklaces cost £20 and I've not had a single complaint about the quality of them so I'm sure you'd be pleased with them. The ebay ones look like plastic to be honest which I simply don't use.

I can post you free glass pearls (fake) and freshwater pearls (real) samples tomorrow if you want to compare them. I've done this for 5 hitchers in the last 2 weeks and it has really helped them choose.

Glass pearls are available in 4mm, 5mm, 6mm, 7mm etc etc sizes pearls so I can also send you the various sizes so you are in no doubt as to what size you would like to order.

This photograph shows 6mm glass pearls

This is a graduated design starting at 10mm going down to 4mm with crystal rondells at the focal point, again with glass pearls costing £20

This design shows freshwater pearls which is more expensive but considering they are great quality pearls I don't charge the earth. This starts at £32.

Swarovski Crystals in 6mm and Glass Pearls in 4mm again costing £20

Please don't hesitate to contact me (******@**************.**.**) if you want to discuss anything, without any obligation. I'm happy to help in whatever way I can.

My website is www.lynseysdesigns.co.uk and I still have loads of designs on my facebook page www.facebook.co.uk/lynseysdesigns1.

    xx

I know the lovely Lynsey (aka Purrfect Gems HIB) does some that look remarkably similar to this for a fraction of the cost! Might be worth taking a look at her website or FB group if she doesnt come along shortly! xx

That is a lovely, classic necklace. I have one very similar with genuine pearls. It was a gift, so I can't tell you how much it was, but what I do know is that my fiance told me he got it comparitively cheap, he brought the pearls in Dubrovnik, then paid a jeweller here to drill the holes and then it strung it himself.

He said it cost him half what similar ones would in the UK. Maybe now with the magic of the internet you can find some abroad?

Nope, I thought twice about posting it but thought we're all mature adults, devoted to planning our weddings in a very sensible, not at all juvenile way ;-)

But then I grew up watching Beavis and Butthead so I giggle at words like 'drilling'!
