Inspiration Meltdown - Help please!

PhoenixAngelic, 29 August, 2012 at 22:41 Posted on Planning 0 10

So we have just over three weeks to go and inspiration has run dry.

We need to come up with ten table names.

We are having a semi-theme - nothing too heavy or overly done. But it's a Chinese meets English countryside on the first day of autumn in a beautifully magical place which combines both (Matara Centre).

Nine circular tables and one small top table.

So far we've considered:

Mythical creatures (this stems from the Phoenix & Dragon, which will appear in various guises during the day and has been incorporated into our stationery)

Famous double acts (people, foods, etc)

TV detectives (we're from Oxford and I'm particularly a fan of detective series so there's a lot of fodder there but it doesn't necessarily 'fit' with anything else)

Autumn (my daughter came up with this one tonight but hasn't offered any ideas).

Nothing so far has really grabbed our attention. We don't want to use numbers - politics and all that - but want to go with something which 'fits' or has meaning and doesn't just end up being a bit naff.

Please please help if you can. You never know, your one seemingly crazy idea might just ignite the creative spirit again so please just go for it!

I'd stick with the mythical theme seeing as you already have the phoenix and the dragon going on - how about zodiac signs? chinese zodiac? greek mythology? or even chinese place names could be quite cool Smiley smile xx

I like the mythical creatures idea, 2012 is the year of the dragon in the Chinese zodiac (you may already know this though). Other than dragon and phoenix you could have unicorn, centaur, minotaur, mermaid, Nessie, pixie...I'm sure google could come up with plenty more!

We're having things we believe make a successful marriage, trust, love, faith etc and putting the dictionary definition underneath it on the table.

To all you lovely Hitchers, my eternal gratitude!

We have decided upon a hybrid of a couple of the ideas you came up with - forgive me if I've 'borrowed' a bit of yours.

So we're going with the idea of a values - the things that help to make a good marriage. We made a big long list and then each chose the 4 or 5 which meant most to us. We then popped up to our local Chinese restaurant and spoke to a really lovely young lady there who has grown up in this country but is of Chinese descent. She has (overnight, bless her) come up with the Chinese version of each of the values we selected.

What I will be doing this weekend is putting together:

The English word for the 'value' (trust, faith, compassion, etc)

The Chinese version of that word

The Oxford English Dictionary (given that we're from here) definition of the word.

This incorporates H2B's ancestry, my roots (from Oxford), the values we hold dear and our love of literature.

Thank you so so much for your help with this. Once I have the table cards sorted, I'll grab a picture and post it up here so you can see the finished product.

And of course, after our big event in three weeks (eeek!) I'll write a (probably lengthy) wedding report so you can see and read all about our magical day at Matara.

Thank you again. I'm sure I'll come up with another challenge between now and then so watch this space!
