Inspiration needed.....what's the best favour you've ever been given?

emmamac73, 3 September, 2010 at 22:21 Posted on Planning 0 33

As per the title...I'm struggling to choose favours. So...from your experience what is the best you've received?

I'm going round in cirlces, starting with simple chocs/sweets in colour co-ordinated in bags. Then thought about something more "useful"...thought lip balm/compact mirror/mints for ladies...but struggling for me....mini after shave? Alcohol?

As a wedding guest do you actually want something you can keep or are you happy with some nice sweets/chocs to nibble on :-) What's the best favour you've been given/seen?

I've seen sooo many favours discarded at weddings, I don't want us to waste money. We have budgetted £2 per person.

Thanks!

I've not been to very many weddings, but never been impressed with the favours. One was an organza bag of mini eggs (Tasty but boring!) and another was a candle of a brides dress.. Thought that was really crappy tbh (No offence if anyone has done either of these).

I'm sure some people wont like my choice of favours; homemade jams.

Tbh I think most people aren't too bothered.

Having said that I am making wine glass charms for everyone, but they are only costing me about 25p each to make!!!

Have you thought about doing something relating to you and your H2B or where you are getting married?

Our reception venue was opposite a distillery with a lot of local heritage surrounding it so we had mini Whisky/gin/vodka bottles made from the distillery. They went down an absolute storm!

well we're keeping it all pretty simple... but i think its cute and matches in very well!

3 packets of simple love hearts, tied in ribbon the same tartan of the kilts. And Iv made a wee card with Thank-you for joining us on our special day and the wee GD calligraphic design I did on the invites and order of services as well! Smiley smile

I have to be honest and say that every wedding I have been to, I have always left the favours on the table! Despite this, I still want to have them at our wedding Smiley smile

I googled unique wedding favours and quite a few things came up. You could try that. One of the best ones I saw was using photo frames as place cards ... kills two birds with one stone!

This was £2.25 each and you don't really have to buy one for each guest!

A packet of seeds! I would have liked to have this too, but it was copying my SIL2B, so I prefered to choose something else.

The only favour I can remember keeping is a prett candle that is on my dresser.

I am much more into the idea of something lasting rather than edible. My favours are tiny flower pots with sunflower seeds for ladies (I trained as a florist and love all things growing) and charity pins for the men (in honour of H2B dad who passed away suddenly of a heart attack)

Things that are connected to you somehow is also a nice touch. As far as them being left behind all guests are different, I personally pocket mine straight away, I always love little gifts ?

I saw the charity pins at a wedding last year and knew when I saw it that I would have them as I lost my Dad to cancer 10 years ago so it would be personal. The couple then put mini boxes of Thorntons chocolates in each room with a thank you note. I think it was a lovely touch, but is it wrong to steal this idea?

I love the idea of seeds. That there will be a gorgeous reminder of our day in the way of flowers for all our guests. I like these

I have always been given chocolate and althugh its nice and def always get eaten esp once the alcohol gets flowing it didnt really fit in with our theme. We are having a table with a number of baskets on each one will have a different favour for people to pick up if they want. One basket will have bunches of pencils in our colours with the date on tied with ribbon, another will have homemade shortbread hearts in little bags and the last homemade soap. We are also planning on having escort cards which will be tea bags or small boxes of tea and so people will also be able to keep those. I know i have gone over the top but we are having a small wedding and most people are travelling a long way so i want them to feel spoilt.

The almonds are a little boring imo... I saw quite a few left behind at my BIL2Bs wedding.

We have chosen something from the island as all our family are coming up from England. Just thought it would be nice for them to take a little piece of Lewis back home with them.

So we are having a Isle of Lewis chess piece for the men (google it, its lovely and is in the Harry Potter film), The story behind the chess set is very interesting. A local made soap for the ladies. The soap is absolutly gorgeous and i have been using it for years. Not cheap imo... £3 per bar with a discount. But we are only having a small doo so i was able to spend a little more per person.

I'm considering having Bath Bombs for the ladies and green and blacks chocolate for the men. The only wedding I've ever been to where I didn't get chocolate (which I always eat) was one where I got a pen with the bride and grooms name and date on it. I've also been given sugared almonds but have never eaten them... I'm always scared I'll lose a tooth!

I love the idea of the bookmarks and pencils with the names and date of the wedding on. I had thought about doing packets of seeds but I'm not too sure now. I think I prefer the pencils/bookmarks idea.

The only wedding I've been to with favours, is one where they had sugared almonds. I don't think anybody ate them or even took them home. The kids used them to throw at each other.

I'm having Heart Foundation charity pins in memory of my Dad. I'm going to put a little card with it explaining the reason why. The card is more for my OHs side, as they didn't know my Dad

I'm having a Parisian theme so the favours are going to be little espresso cups and saucers, with a tiny coffee spoon to go with it - wrapped up in celaphane or a box (haven't decided yet) with chocolate coffee beans inside. Sounds expensive but I'm getting it all in for £3 a head. You do have to shop around to get the best deals. Try Kate Aspen's website for a whole range of ideas too - I bought the place names from there - mini lamp posts (again, Paris theme!)

If the favours can match your theme or colour scheme then all the better. Smiley smile

    I think thats lovely....

The last wedding I went to we got wild seed paper in the shape of a butterfly (the theme of the day!) we dont have a garden so planted them at my mums house, we had 3 between us all and so when they grew there was quite a lot-my mum even bought more wild seeds as she liked her little 'wild' garden so much!

(my sister then went round to feed their rabbit when they had gone away and called me up to say she had fed the rabbit all mum's wild plants as the rabbit hadnt eaten much of its food......GRRRR!!)

Anyway looked lovely when it was there!

2 in particular stick out in my mind, saracroft had vintage tea cups with flowers in them that looked sooo pretty. My brother and sister-in-law had stcuk an acorn to everyone's place card and asked them to plant it; that was 4 years ago and most people did! It's a really nice reminder of their day. Pic of Sara's teacups below for inspiration....

this *may* have been my exact favour! my teacup is exactly the same as this. so wByGeorges. sara's were the nicest i'd ever had - it is currently sitting on my bedside unit acting as a kirby grip holder ? but hey, at least it's being used.

we gave whiskey minis to all the men (as FIL got them cheap cheap cheap) and hotel chocolat chocs for the women (as my best friend got them cheap cheap cheap!).

sugared almonds are boring, uninspiring and a totally weird option to choose (IMHO) - i mean, who would go into a sweet shop and ask for sugared almonds? if you can't think of anything that you know your guests won't eat/use i wouldn't bother.

i remember someone on here had salt and pepper shakers in the shape of two peas in a pod: https://aweddinglessordinary.co.uk/shopexd.asp?id=3455 - prime example of something i would have left on the table, or just thrown away.

I have never had a good favour. Every wedding I've been to I have considered the favours to be a waste of the bride and groom's dosh. Personally, I'd rather have another top up of champagne for the money spent.

When I was younger I used to waitress at posh weddings at a hotel. Regardless of the amount of money spent on favours and how original they were as an idea, there were always a huge proportion left over at the end of the night.

The charity pins are a nice idea although, I have to say, supporting a particular charity is a very personal choice. If, for example, I was given a pin to support 'alcoholic guinea pigs anonymous' or something I wouldn't chose to support personally, I wouldn't wear the pin, it would simply get bunged in a draw. By all means give the cash to a charity that is meaningful to you, but not everyone will wear their pins. I know this might upset people to see them left at the end of the night but it is a distinct possibility.

BW - I think this probably is your exact favour!! It was either yours, Becky's or Robyn's and as the colours were alternated I think it must have been yours ?

We really struggled on this so have decided on something edible - we are having big chocolate lollipops doubling up as people's placecards as they are having their names on.

We may also have alcholic minatures (Guiness for men, Baileys for ladies) as its an irish wedding and we have a family member who works for Diageo we will only do it if we can get them cheap!

Everyone I've been to it has been chocolate or something edible. I always take the favours as I know the Bride & Groom have put effort into making/getting them. Chocolates will always get eaten but they dont last and I dont personally like the idea of giving them out. If I'm going to spend the money out for favours I want them to be a lasting memory of our day. Thats why I'm giving flower seeds as my favours.

We are probably going to have lottery tickets that double up as name cards too. I just hope that if any of our friends become millionaires they remember who bought them the ticket ?

One of my friends put personalised books of matches on the tables, don't know if they were favours or not, but certainly not the best idea, especially with loads of little ones around.

I like the chocs with initials on them from Thorntons.
