Insurance Claim going in...

FIONATS73, 6 October, 2010 at 13:32 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 8

OK I did not want to go down this route but have been advised to.

The assesor is coming out tomorrow and meeting the hubster. The radiator we think has a dodgy value and has leaked before but not like last week. It empited the whole boiler all over h and the hall. So 5 towels later and a couple of days later we think all is OK leek fixed again. Then Sunday there is a horrid smell in our hall like a damp smell. So I thought the carpet needs cleaning, so called out the company I use at work and he came out that night. With a damp monitor.

It turns out all the water is trapped he thinks under the carpet and it has got into the wall, so the walls damp. The wallpaper has started bubbling and loosening, which the pup has now encourgaged and removed some it. So our plans of re-decorating could now be paid for cross fingers and a new carpet. They said they only fix the area damaged but as I explained it a hall stairs and landing which all match as the stairs our open and not closed.

So we will just have to see if they agree, the assesor is coming in the morning at 8am, we have already been told to get quotes for drying it out, new carpet and decorators.

Yep it looks a bit wrong though due to the chewing of the walls by amber. But hey ho and all that she did not chew the copper pipe on the radiator and thats what leaked. Its just a shame though the carpet is only 3 years old. As we got it fitted when we did up the house.

But cross fingers the pups teath will be gone and the hall will be all posh for christmas

Good luck, hope they sort it for you. That's what insurance is for, not just to make insurance companies richer!

    HI Fiona,

if you need any advice on insurance and what they will cover, i work for a building company deal with insurance claims day in day out so know whats covered and whats not. Have you got a network/contractor allocated by your insurer dealing with this?

First things first though, have you fixed the leaking radiator?

Secondly, Is your hall, stairs and landing continuous all the way through with no breaks or dado rails?

Thirdly, you will have 2 excesses to pay as your carpet will come under the contents and the decorating will come under your buildings.

Thank you yes I have some questions, please any help appreciated

    Yes to all your questions

The assesor has come out this morning. We pulled back the carpet last night and the underlay is still damp and you can see where the carpet grippers are they are still damp and are black iykwim

Hubster fixed the radiator so cross fingers no more leaks

The hall continues from the kitchen to the front door up the stairs to the landing. All the carpets match, and all the decorating matches they are all solid walls no breaks in the decorating and no handrail on the wall against the stairs

    TIA for advise

The carpet company are coming out tomorrow to give us a quote for the insurance

    Then its just the decorator

    HI,

From what you've said, you should get all the hall stairs and landing done.

Do you know if the water has gone under the underlay to the floorboards? I cant really say much about the carpet as that would come under your contents insurance. The decorating will come under your buildings. I only tend to deal with the buildings side of the claims so i cant really comment on that.

Has a particular decorator been assigned to deal with it?

Thank you so much, we have been asked 2 get 2 quotes for carpet and decorates which we are in the process of doing and a report of chemdry who I know as we use him from work. He came Monday night to look at it. He is now coming this afternoon and will charge us for the report, can this be claimed back through the insurance? As they have asked us to get it?

We have pulled back the carpet and yes, the underlay has been spoilt. Also you can see on the carpets grippers they are extremly wet and black. We do not have floorboards in the hallway it is solid concrete.

We have also been told now to take up the carpet by the assesor in the hallway

    TIA

We use chemdry at work. Like i said earlier, i dont tend to deal with contents claims, which is what your carpets will come under, so i cant really advise on that - sorry. Speak to your insurer - they will be able to advise you better on that. But, I would find out why you have to pay for the report! The only thing you should ever have to pay on a claim should be your excess. Is the concrete wet? If so, are they leaving dryers?

Do you want to do the works yourself or have someone else do it for you. If you have the contractor from your insurer do the works, the works should come with a 12 month guarentee.

Thanks took up the carpet as chemdry said it delaminating. Anyway when we did the unlay was soaking and breaking up, once removed the floor covering is soaking.

So h parents are bringing us a demidifier today to help dry is out

At least the smell has gone now must have been the underlay

    Took lots of pictures though
