Interested to know thoughts on microwaves

Cocktail-Couture, 26 September, 2013 at 13:42 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 55

Do you use one? Personally I don't have one or use one, I have in the past and probably unknowingly still do when eating

out etc. the thought of doing microwave veg or any food or baby's bottles just doesn't sit right with me and getting rid of it a few

years so has made me cook alot better by using fresh produce. Not against anyone who does use them just interested in otters thoughts on them!

Article below on why they banned them in Russia.

Why doesn't it sit right with you?

ETA - I just read that article. I assume you believe it? IO can't think why. There is no evidence there, just pseudo science. Sort of thing that the Daily Mail would print.

We've got one, we use it for defrosting things mainly and heating up things like beans, rice pudding etc. We don't use it for cooking microwave meals because we don't really have them anyway.

Don't really understand what the problem is? Happy to be enlightened!

That article is laughable. Argh, microwave use means we irradiated food. Argh, let's not think about how most of our food is sterilized/preserved/ripened....

How do you steam veg? Lots of veg benefit from shorter cooking times and a steamed process, rather than boiling in a pan. Microwaves are one way to achieve that.

I through the microwave before I read any articles as I felt personally it could not be good for you.

Radiation, nutrients lost in food etc. hence why that doesn't sit right with me persoanlly I am not sayin everyone should do what I do.

Maybe that wasn't the best article but there are better ones out there and surely there is some truth in what they are saying?

When you boil your veg, look at the colour of yhe water....all your nutrients have escaped. As Footlong said, they fair better from a shorter cooking period. Hence I microwave some veg.

Plus a jacket potato takes *forever* if you just put it in the oven!

Nothing wrong with microwaves IMO. We didn't have one in our flat as we had no space, and god did I miss it. Quickness-jackets, better veg, softening butter when baking, defrosting....

I assume you therefore don't use a mobile phone, listen to the radio, watch a TV, turn lights on, hell, even go out in the sunshine. Or the dark.

This from the same country that banned talking about homosexuality. (amongst other things)

On a serious note the article you link to has mixed actual facts ( these days people eat too much cr@p) and added a generous dose of conjecture and made up science and a bit of coincidence ( the release date of the microwave and in increase in obesity)

The author doesnt even want you to cook food, just use a (Not non stick) pan on a hob or a toaster?! Oh and to be on the safe side only eat raw food, here buy my book to find out how.

This is exactly how nonsense like homeopathy gets promoted.

There must be some truth in it, surely? After all, someone has written something on the internet about it...

You can easily live without one, I use a microwave a few times a year but I think the others in the house use it a little bit more often.

I don't have one, but not because of safety concerns. We would hardly ever use one if we did have it so there seems no point, as it would just be taking up valuable surface space on the kitchen units. We also use a veg steamer to cook our veg.

OP, can i suggest you read this article from cancer research? It may put your mind at rest that any food you eat while out that has been microwaved is perfectly safe.

    ---

I do use a microwave, not very often admittedly but that's down to what we eat rather than any problems with them. I'd have so much more washing up if I didn't, it does veggies without having to use a pan! Woo. (The bowls go in the dishwasher).

How would I reheat left over pasta at work without a microwave?

I think they should make a new superhero film about someone who gets their powers from standing too close to the microwave.
