MrJMP was saying something he had a reuters thing through - Some kids in the Daughters class were saying she had 5 months off school & has posted a blog on a US website.
Anyway I'm more concerned with the names those children have been given??
I agree the daughter looks pregnant, but why would the photos not be shot better (i.e. with a sibling in front of her) to cover it up in the official shot?
Well, there's a lot of total bollocks in that article. For a start, leaking amniotic fluid does NOT mean that "time is of the essence" and that birth is imminent, and neither is having a baby a "whole month premature" the big emergency which that implies.
She doesn't look pregnant, but then not all women do. Maybe there's something in it, maybe not. It's just yet another example of how female politicians' appearances become central to any discussion of them IMO. The world is now poring over photos of Sarah Palin's belly, and minutely examining her teenage daughter's body as well. That's a bit icky, really.
There's too much information missing for me. Plus the daughter just looks like she's got a bit of a belly. My stomach can look quite "pregnant" and that couldn't be further from the truth ? Surely if they were covering it up they'd have done a better job or it and Sarah Palin would have worn a fake "al la Bree" pregnancy suit? Or are they trying to say that she didn't find out about the daughter until she was 7 months along? In which case she must have hidden it well!
The more I read about this woman, the more I think she's real piece of work (to use an Americanism ?). Anti-abortion, literal creationist, promotes oil drilling in Alaskan wildlife reserves, pro-capital punishment, opposes same sex marriage. BBC reporting that her unmarried 17 year old daughter is pregnant and will be marrying the father - a shotgun marriage of political convenience if ever there was one. Fark me, this woman is the Antichrist.
Not that she'd know, because she didn't get her first passport until 2007.
Oh, and in a poll conducted since her nomination, apparently women said they were less likely to vote Republican as a result. However, men said they were more likely, possibly because of all those pictures of her with a scary-looking gun looking as though she's about to start a one-woman Hungerford massacre. Some people like that sort of thing, apparently.
I suppose statistically, it's more likely that the baby is SP's given he has Down's Syndrome. Although I daresay it wouldn't be unheard of for a 17 year old to have a baby with Down's Syndrome, certainly a lot rarer than for someone her mother's age.
She seems one fucking scary woman anyway. And not just because she thinks things like Track, Trig, Bristol, Piper and Willow are good names for children ?
Actually statistically more Downs bbies are born to those 5 than >45 as they are more fertile and hve more babies (and less Downs screening) though of course you're correct that out of the two SP is the more likely to conceive a Downs baby.
I like the name Piper but the rest? Poor child being named after a branch of maths.
Or is that Trig short for Trigger as a nod to the gun lobby? ?
She's one very scary candidate - apparently McCaine only met her twice before choosing her and no one mentioned the fact she was the new candidate to her local Republican committee.
To be fair, this pregnancy conspiracy theory is just one shot in a whole armoury against palin just now - the vast majority of the criticism for the choice of her is that she's completely and utterly unqualified and inexperienced to be VP, that she's got little local political experience, and is an almost complete unknown even to the presidential candidate.
And she has almost certainly been chosen because she's a Bible bashing creatonist who will appeal to the right wing religious nuts in the USA and make the Republicans seem less stick in the mud because they've chosen a woman and that's almost as good as having a Black candidate in the "out there" stakes.
My fav rumour today has been that when she took over in her current Alaskan role, she asked all city managers to resign to show loyalty and only hired the ones who agreed to do so. No idea if this is true or not but it's fab.
I do feel sorry for her teenage daughter who has done nothing to deserve the lime light and can't choose her mother, esp if she's been forced into a rather fast marriage. But oh the irony that Palin is now reaping the benefits of being strongly committed to a policy of Abstinence Only sex education...
So, are there/have there been 2 recent pregnancies then? Did Sarah recently have a child with Downs syndrome (Trig) and her daughter is now 7 months pregnant, or have I completely misunderstood?
I think, from reading all the articles, that SP announced she was PG at 7 months, but everyone said she'd lied and it was her daughter's. It turns out that her daughter just had a bit of puppy fat, SP was telling the truth and had a baby. Now they've announced that her daughter is 5 months PG. And that would explain why she was cuddling her little brother lots. If she was only just pg then, she'd be maybe feeling a bit maternal!
And if anything happens to John McCain (who is one of the oldest presidential candidates ever, with a history of melanoma), she'll be the next President of the US.
Somehow, George Dubya seems slightly less scary......
Technically, McCain's the oldest new major-party Presidential candidate - aside from Reagan running for a second term in 1984, and he was only a year older. And it was pretty clear in retrospect that Reagan wasn't up to the job in the last couple of years, presumably because of the early symptoms of what we now know was Alzheimer's - and McCain's health history is none too great. I imagine being tortured by the Vietnamese didn't do wonders on that score either.
Still, one positive benefit of Palin's candidacy is that she makes McCain look seriously old. And I suspect she may well have convinced waverers (who don't like the Republicans but who think McCain is refreshingly independent from the usual party line and therefore might be worth a punt) not to vote for him, given the likely replacement if anything were to happen to him in office.
There was a great article about McCain in the Telegraph magazine on Saturday - I haven't got it to hand but highlights for me included:
When asked at a press conference what would be the best way to deal with the potential Iranian problem, McCain responded by singing, to the tune of the Beach Boy's Barbara Ann, "Bomb bomb bomb, Bomb bomb Iran"
McCain, when speaking about foreign policy, citing problems along the Iraq/Pakistan border.
McCain giving a speech back in 1998(?) where he made a joke about Chelsea Clinton, then aged 17 - "Why is Chelsea Clinton so ugly? Because Janet Reno's her father." Apparently he later apologised to Bill for that one.
And lots of other good stuff about his appraently vicious temper and anger management issues. ( including calling his wife a c*** in public after she ruffled his thinning hair).
Whatever the truth of it all, she's seriously scary ?
Surely no one would believe that disenchanted Hillary voters from the Democrats will vote for her? Just because she's a girl? Despite the fact that her views oppose everything which they'd presumably stand for?
If the rumours about young Trigonometry's real parentage are true then it wouldn't be surprising if his real mother was now pregnant again. It's what happens when teenage girls have their babies taken away from them.
I can't believe that's the primary reason - as you say, no-one could possibly be that thick/shallow, or at least not in sufficient numbers to swing an election. So I think it's got rather more to do with bringing pro-Bush but anti-McCain conservatives on board (and especially religious conservatives - the whole "I'm so anti-abortion that I knowingly had a child with Down's" line plays exceptionally well to them), with the faint possibility that her youth and gender might attract some floating voters who never made up their minds in the first place.
The VP debates will be interesting, though - on the face of it, Joe Biden should wipe the floor with Palin on pretty much every count, but the fact that she's female and much younger might well cause him to hold back.
Much though it appears to be the most rediculous choice ever I've seen quotes such as "she's an NRA member, she gets my vote" "ahe'll end our dependancy on foreign oil " (Erm have you missed that she's running for VP and the actual presidential candiadate is opposed to drillign in Alaska - well at least for now...... ) and in response to her doughter's pregnacy "she's marrying the father and keeping the baby, if only more parents took this approach" WTF!!!!
The average american IQ has to be in single digits!
