Interior design advice please

*Kitty*, 11 May, 2009 at 15:09 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 4

H and I have bought a new 2 bedroom flat, not only is this our first bought home but its a new build, due to be completed in December this year.

We need to choose our kitchen work tops and units, bathroom tiles for the main bathroom and en suite, carpets for the bedrooms and wood flooring for the hall, living room and kitchen.

Im not much of an interior designer, so id like to know what kind of things hitchers would go for?

I like modern, but not "space age, weird" modern!

The builders have told us the sooner we can choose what we'd like the better, ive bought some magazine but all the pics they have the kitchens are based in very large fabulous homes, massive bathrooms, the type with the bath in the middle of the room and LOADS of floor space. All the pics seem to be ultra modern and extremely high end of the market looking. So im finding it hard to draw inspiration from them.

Id like to choose stuff thats still going to look relatively modern in 4 or 5 years time.

TIA x

I found looking round the show homes gave some ideas. obviously they put minimal things in the rooms to make them look bigger, but i found that the decor they used, ie tiles etc. were spot on. As for the kitchen, i really love the white/black/red shiny coloured doors, but am not convinced it will still look modern in 5 years time.

I finished this kitchen in 2004, and I would still make the same choices again, as I personally feel that simple white units don't date as quickly as wood finishes.

I like warm beiges on the walls in bathrooms, with sleek white suites and minimal chrome fittings.

I adored the kitchen in our apartment and even though it was small it really used the space well and I loved the huge cooker. If I was doing a kitchen again I'd either go for this or for white units.

Claires - Im not a red and black person, but those colours on glossy units do look fab!! Im liking the idea of glossy white units but ive heard they show up loads of marks and finger prints etc

Flissy666 - That kitchen is lovely, my mum mentioned white units with a light wood work top, it also looks very fresh. What you said about the bathroom, is exactly what I had in mind, though I did see a bathroom in another show house with dark slate coloured tiles and white suite and chrome fittings that also looked fab BUT is it too dark? That also leads me to my next question...... should I keep the main bathroom and en suite the same design or would it be silly to have one beigey coloured bathroom and the other slate coloured?

Poochana, I LOVE that kitchen! That would be my original choice, lightish wood units with a black coloured worktops - ahh desicions desicions!

Ive got a porceleonsa (sp) down the road from me, which is also supplying the tiles for our flat, so i'll take a wonder down and have a look at their show room.

If anyone has any ideas for living room designs, we have a brand new chocolate brown leather suite we will be taking with us so it would need to match with that.

    Thanks for the replies!!

I am an anal sod, and my last house had the same suite, tiles and paint in the main bathroom and the ensuite. I just liked the way that it made the space within the house feel more homogenous, without being broken up by different tiles/colours/etc.

That said, my current place has completely different en-suite and main bathroom (I inherited them), and it's not offensive on the eye at all.
