Intermittent fasting .... anyone tried it?

Pook82, 4 January, 2013 at 14:38 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 33

There was a BBC documentary on this a while ago. Just wondered if anyone has tried it? Did you see results in weight loss/general wellbeing?

    No I haven't.

However we went away for the weekend with friends before Christmas, and one friend was taking about this. He tried it and never felt better!

I probably could do it when my mind is in the 'diet zone' but I am a terrible grump when hungry so I would feel for my poor husband!

Do you know what the program was called? I'll see if I can find it on iplayer.

I think boyos mate has, he only eats between 12noon and 8pm, he did lots of sums to work out his calories and does regular exercise- he has been doing it for months according to boyo and he is looking lean/toned.

Didn't see the documentary so not sure if what I have said is relevant!!

Is this the 5:2 thing? If so, I've read about it on DW. I think I'd be too grumpy to do it!

Yup the BBC one was about eating under 500 cals for 2 days a week and eating normally for the other 5 days. There is also a version wheere you fast for a certain period of the day. I think the doc was called Eat Fast and Live Long.

It's interesting as I've read some good reviews online but never sure how much I can trust them so good to hear some first (or second!) hand experiences!

I met someone who was/is doing it and he claimed that the weight has dropped off him. Essentially, it's a weekly low cal diet but with calorie allowances spread differently over different days (some days you eat lots, some days little).

Apparently (no scientific data to back this up), it mimics how we would eat "in the wild" i.e. periods of indulgence and fasting.

Intermittent farting does not a romantic honeymoon make.

Neither does chronic food poisoning. Unrelated, but still true.

What did you eat on a normal "down day"? I'm thinking fruit salad for breakfast, cupa soup for lunch and salad for dinner that kind of thing?

I guess I did a version of this the year I lost 7 stone. I would eat a certain diet for six days a week and then on the seventh would ahve a takeaway. I tended to have a yoghurt or two for breakfast, soup for lunch and risotto for example for tea. As snacks I had apples and carrots or that sort of thing. On the seventh have a takeaway. I lost the majority of the mass between January and August. I started in the January mainly ebcause it was six weeks post birth and could start exercsiing at that point. I stopped following the diet in the August because I was diagnoised with TMJD and was not allowed anythign but soft food from that point. So had to put a knock on the head to carrots and apples and crunchy food.

I will probably start again once my TMJD is under control and can reagularly eat crunchy food. It worked brilliantly for me.

Pittabre, can I just ask about your TMJD - that's to do with the jaw isn't it? I'm quite certain I have this and was wondering what symptoms you had. I have constant clicking/popping jaw when eating, stiff to open mouth sometimes, headaches, neck and ear pain also I'm dizzy all the time but they've never found the source of it. My jaw gets tired easily and if I was eating say, a filled roll, I would have to stop half way through for a break for an hour or two because its sore. Is this similar?

    Bingo!

The jaw popping is a sign of your jaw popping out. I have a genetic disorder which means my ligaments stretch when they shouldn't so my jaw, my hips, knees etc pop out of their sockets.

I'm trying to remember the name of the department that eventually diagnosed me.

As mine has been caused by an underlying problem that can't be fixed I can only 'manage' it - however you may be one of the lucky few that has a reason for it that can be fixed and I really hope you do. However the things I was told to do have made a massive difference to me. The best thing to happen for my jaw pain was my Ex leaving - since he left I have only had one bad flare before Christmas so stress def makes it worse!

Are you on FB and I can bore you silly with it if you want??

I started this before christmas. I would have a very small bowl of low calorie cereal for breakfast and snap pot of beans for lunch and soup for dinner. I would also supplement this with lots of water and maybe a banana or mini baby bel light.

i lost 8lbs in 8 weeks without doing a single bit of exercise and be VERY naughty on my days off.

unfortunately I was ill for just over 2 weeks over christmas and put 4lbs back on. I am now doing it again but this time will try and eat better on my normal days and exercise on my normal days as well. Doing the 30 day shred DVD every other day!

i really want to lose a stone and a half in the next 6 months!

If the orthodontist fixed it it may have been to do with the teeth not lining up and pushing the jaw out of alignment - I wish that was what I had?

And the Ehlers-Danlos? Well I asked on here and FTLOMB mentioned it could be somethign like this so asked at one of my appointments and the answer was yes but they would need to send me for testing to confirm that officially and there was no point as it would make no difference to any treatement they could give me but it seems that yes! One of the bones in my foot keeps moving out of alignment at the moment and it bloomin hurts, sorry random moan there!
