Internet browsing on a mac

Flowery the Grouch, 4 July, 2008 at 10:48 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 13

So what is the main mac browser? and does it support the google toolbar? If it doesn't is there something else with the same functionality?

Am i going to get hideously confused moving from IE?

Do all the flash and java things work? or do you end up with lots of pages saying "you need a plugin to view this content"? (I used to use Mozialla in linux, and it was a nightmare for not being able to see loads of things, but that was a good few years ago now)

I have never had any issues at all, the main one is called Safari and everything works in it.

Do you have a Mac store near you? If so I would suggest going in. I really can't stress enough how Macs are far superior to any PC's on the market!

Blanket statements never sit comfortably with me, and this one is no exception. My H is a Mac addict and says similar things to the one quoted above frequently. But it really really does depend on what the user wants and expects from a system, and for what purpose it's being used for, etc... I work in IT, and there are some strengths of the Mac OS that are (clearly) superior, but for other things I really do need a Windows and Solaris box to use which do other things in a much more superior way... in fact the stuff I'm doing today actually can't be done on a Mac station full stop.

On a more lighthearted note, I agree that Macs are fab and that the OP shouldn't be scared, Safari is great, we use Firefox on our Macs just out of habit really, it's not somehing you'll have loads of problems using if you're used to IE tbh... have fun!

Safari is OK, but I keep meaning to switch back to Firefox, for the simple reason that the search bar in Safari is google.com not .co.uk.

Most pages work. Occasionally you get something that doesn't, but it's much less common than it used to be. I think you can even download IE for Macs now can't you?

I bet it can if you use Parallels or VMWare Fusion.

    Pedantry rules ?

Safari is great actually and I like the speed. If you need anything a bit more fancy then Firefox works equally well. From memory I think that Safari does a lot of stuff that the google toolbar does.

Does it have buttons? I need buttons. And does that mean that google tool bar doesn't work with safari?

It has buttons. Google toolbar is available for Firefox on the mac, just not safari.

As long as I can have buttons I will be happy.

I used to use safari but started using a website building system last year that it couldn't support. it's the only time i've had problems with the internet crashing.

i switched to firefox and have never had any problems, despite finding it a little awkward to begin with.

    i love my macbook ?

Well despite some of the newer versions supporting DirectX9, the graphic stuff I'm doing isn't viable through using a virtual machine, there's far too much pressure on the level of hardware I have to deal with it (Mac OS running XP running my utilities all sardined into ram (I think it has 2gig)). I've tried it before and ended up doing a force quit because it wouldn't even handle a smooth exit Smiley sad I'm not so sure about booting to a partition either, I don't see the point in going down those roads when a normal PC handles the job perfectly fine (and one at 5 years old at that!).

Having said that I DO love our Macs, we have 4 at home (no that's not a typo), it's just that some tools suit certain things and others suit others as with anything in life, and there is a niche for em all Smiley smile

I have that problem with Firefox too and I'm sure someone else on here has mentioned it before as well. I reinstalled and it worked for a while but then started to freeze up again, so I switched to using Safari permanently. I'm not sure what the issue is, my H had a look at it but hasn't had time to do a lot of investigating.

I am on a shiny Mac and use firefox. Safari just annoyed me for some reason.

Flowery, I have committed high treason according to my family in getting a Mac - I have had PCs in my house since I was about 5 years old, and my Dad spent 5 years as the UK General Manager of Microsoft's software development team. ? Before tht he spent 21 years with IBM...

If I can do it, so can you!

? Thanks Mr Gates for paying for my VIth form college and university education!
