Interview help.

Rubyred, 16 September, 2008 at 17:09 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 9

Afternoon all, i'm in need of a little help.

On Friday i have a second interview for a Training Officers post. I thought and was told it was a mere formality....Wrong!

I have to do a 10 minute presentation - this in itself is not a problem, the problem however is that the choice of subject is my own choice!

Argh, im struggling to think of anything at the moment. I wonder if anyone can help, tried and tested, or if anyone has been the employer and have seen an effective presentation etc.

I wished the 'case study' as they have called it was more than 2 lines long so i'd have at least half a chance at getting the position.

Thanks you and no pressure, i really need this job......don't we all.

    Hi Ruby,

I'm a trainer too. Can you ask them for more info on the case study?

I did a C&G in Teaching Adults and we had to do a presentation as part of our assessment. What are you interested in, outside work? One person in our group did belly dancing & got everyone up & involved, etc. I guess they're doing it to see how you'd put a short training session together? Do you have any more info?

Hi Doughnut, thanks for the reply. I 've had an email regarding the interview and an attachement which i hoped would shed more light, but no.

It literally says 'Case Study. Put together a 10 minute presentationon a subject of your choice. Powerpoint is availalble' Thats it!!!!!

I can put together a training session but i dont think thats what they want, i'm guessing its to see if you can do stand up delivery. As its an interview i can't really do too much with the 'audience' as there will be only 2 people.

Im stressing about the subject not doing it which i know im good at! Oh flip.

If you have good presentation skills then give a presentation on that - a heck of a lot of people need training in it!

I wouldn't stress too much about the subject - I think they will be more interested in how you put something together and how effectively you can present.

Just pick something you are confident in talking about so you won't be worried about the content and can concentrate on the actual presenting.

My H has an interview on Friday as well and it sounds fairly similar (hope it's not the same job ?) In his case his presentation is going to be on a clinical system they use. But, it sounds to me like they more want to assess your training style than the content of the presentation. Therefore, just pick something you're comfortable with. Am sure others will come up with some actual ideas though.

Be positive - this is a perfect opportunity to show what an interesting/passionate person you are!

If they wanted you to do a presentation based on your job they would have asked. Choose something that interests you or that you are enthusiastic about such as a hoby etc. Your passion will be conveyed and hopefully the interviewers will be interested and will learn something.

Thank you all, Yes i think i going to do something on what im interested in rather than trying to second guess them, so.......

I teach dancing, i love holidays, I have just returned from Florida, im a mom, i love clothes and fashion, we have a dog called Oscar.....er?

Im still stuck, H just suggested a guide to Florida or pro's and con's of booking through a travel agent against booking direct. Oh bugger im getting wound up!

    thanks again

When I was 18 and interviewing to join Nestle's post A level scheme I had to do a presentation with no given subject and I chose to tell them about my sport of ski racing. It was pre-powerpoint so my Dad photocopied some photos onto acetates for me but you could do a much more professional job today!

I agree it's more about style & delivery than content.

I would choose a subject you enjoy talking about but make it informative and interesting. Not sure if the pros and cons of travel agents would be that? Maybe your actual holiday in Florida could work including some funny anecdotes or a training proposal to put to another company if that's relevant to the role?

Give a talk about the value of diversity in the workplace. Guaranteed to go down well if you embrace all the elements of the subject and deliver it with conviction.

FWIW I was asked to sit in on some interviews for a large organisation that was employing technology type people. The diversity element had the same point score value as the technical element.
