Introducing Kevin

Boop, 8 May, 2009 at 16:14 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 29

He came to stay with us as a foster dog at the start of April. Things were a bit rocky at the start as Riley wasn't used to sharing her space and he was quite stressed, having spent the past 4 months in a small rescue in deepest darkest wales and then being suddenly catapaulted into SW London, but he soon settled in and by day three they were playing together. These days they're pretty much inseparable.

I didn't want to keep him at the start as I didn't think we were the right home for him, but he's really blossomed over the last couple of weeks and he's definitely got the naughty streak that we love. Mr Boop loves having two dogs and finds watching them play and loon around together almost as magical as I do. There are a couple of issues to sort out - he's a bit of a resource guarder (space / toys) from Riley but that's not surprising given his history. He's loving clicker training and now has the courage to offer all sorts of behaviours - a massive change from the nervous, inhibited dog of 5 weeks ago.

He's approx 11 months old - a whippet or greyhound lurcher of some sort. He has lots of tiny brindle spots all over his back and tummy, and brindle spots on his ears and tail. He was an unclaimed stray from the pound. An almost identical back story to Riley.

Aw bless. Look at the expression on his face in the second picture - he's saying "look at meeeee - I'm home!!" Lovely that the two of them are getting on so well.

He looks like he's in heaven in that last one! Hope he brings you all lots of happiness.

To digress - I went to Dogs' Trust last week to chat to the care manager. Specifically to ask why all of the dogs on their local site state that they wouldn't be suitable for children under the age of 10. She basically said that they 'test' the dogs with children of their staff/helpers/walkers and no-one has very young children, so exposure to young children (especially as young as Toby, who's 2) isn't something they can 'test'. She said she thought it was pretty unlikely I would find any reputable rescue centre to advise any rescue dog would be suitable for a 2 and 5 yr old. So I found myself sitting in a rescue centre being talked in to getting a puppy... which was bizzare actually.

Sorry to gate crash but you were so helpful the other week, I wanted to keep you posted, hope that's alright. x

Hmm, Janna, that's an odd attitude - but I can see why she said what she did. There are lots of smaller rescue centres that can test dogs with small children, and know exactly what the dogs histories are etc but there are dodgy ones too and she's not going to advise you which is which I guess.

If you look at www.dogpages.org.uk on the 'We need a home' section there's a place called Lizzies Barn. There's a dog there - called Pongo I think- who comes into the category of ideal first dog for a family - handed in because the family home was repossesed and rented accommodation wouldn't take pets.

ETA - there are loads of puppies in rescue too so it doesn't preclude a rescue dog if you do decide to go down the puppy route.

Aww Kevin's fab and him and Riley look right at home together!

Well done for the hard work you've been putting into Kevin, it sounds as though it's beginning to pay off and i'm sure he is a much happier dog as a result of you taking the time and energy into him.

Also your cat is soooooo sweet - what does he/she make of the new addition to the Boop family?

Thanks for the link Boop - I found him. He is gorgeous - a retriever would be ideal. But he's already 12 years old. I would worry that I'd just be lining up the children for early heart break as chances are he won't be around for very many more years. BUT I have bookmarked that site and will have a good hunt tonight.... will keep you posted.

Thanks for that link, Clodders. I did click the link last time but couldn't see any dogs that would fit the bill for us at the moment. Are there others not listed?

Not so well judging by how quickly he disembowled the squeaking pheasant toy. He's my heelwork to music dog. He has the moves already - shame he's about as co-ordinated as I am [roftl]

I'm getting my gundog fix elsewhere - I'm going to be helping teach dogsbody on my college tutor's clicker gundog courses over the summer and then I've got some shooting stuff lined up once the season starts again.

What a gorgeous boy. Love his name!

Glad he's settling in well, sounds like he's landed on his feet being welcomed into your home ?

(My dog sits on the arm of the couch in the same way - so cute)

    Hi

I know of 3 dogs that sound suitable for you from another forum I go on

A lab, a springer or a collie springer cross, all good with children and needing a new home(not together)
