Invitation Question

leni, 4 August, 2009 at 10:21 Posted on Planning 0 6

We get married early December, I'm currently in the process of making the invitations.

Our venue want our number 4 weeks before the wedding, so giving us a week to chase round people, I'm thinking of asking for the invitations in 5 weeks before the wedding. but when should I send them out?

Have you sent out save the dates? Because if not, I would probably send them as soon as you like because a lot of people have Christmas parties in early December. We sent our invites out 5-6 months before the wedding which I know is very early, but we didnt want the added expense of save the dates...

We have sent out the save the dates, sent them in Feb to the main family and friends (mostly the day guests) and the evening lot mostly know from facebook, chats or word of mouth!

In which case Id personally send the invites out 8 - 10 weeks before. It only gives people a few weeks to reply, but equally if they see the reply date being quite soon, they might actually do it instead of leaving it and forgetting about it if you see what I mean?

We've already had our invitations made as a family friend did them for us. We haven't sent out Save the Dates and I've put quite an early RSVP deadline on our invites so I'm aiming to send ours out in April, the wedding is at the end of July. I've put the RSVP date as the end of May - think that is pretty early as a lot of people would have only just sent them out at that point, but my logic is that if a few people are late, it gives me a week or 2 to chase them, and then a week or 2 to sort out the table plan and give final numbers to the venue.

So personally if I were you, I would be keen to send mine out around the middle-end of September. As someone else said, people are often pretty busy in December too and Xmas things get booked up pretty early with firms, etc.

    Hope that helps a bit!

Edited to add - sorry, didn't read the thread properly. If you've sent out Save the Dates then I agree with groomwithaview. You've got a bit more time to play with and I'd say 8-10 weeks is fine if people are already aware of the date.

Our invites went out in mid-March and RSVP in mid-May for mid-July wedding. Got all but a handful back before the RSVP date tbh but I think including a stamped rsvp card really helped.

Never underestimate how slow guests can be at responding! I would send your invitations out by no later than mid september and put the reply date as at least 6 weeks prior to the wedding so that you have two weeks to chase those that don't reply before the venue needs to know the numbers.

    Hi Leni,

I agree with what has already been said - people will take at least two weeks if not more to respond (not from experience, just assuming...) If you have overseas guests I would give it even longer. Planing to send mine quite early as that is the case with us - probably about 5 months before - so November for beginning of April wedding. May seem a bit early but I figure some people don't take the save the dates that seriously (ie don't actually book flights/arrange accommodation) .
