Invitations - have you made your own?

sherry, 13 September, 2008 at 19:40 Posted on Planning 0 7

I'm wondering if this is worth the stress. Was it very time consuming? How long did it take?

I'm on a strict budget and wondered if making them would end up being more than buying them.

I made my own invitations, simply because I couldn't find what I liked at a price I was willing to pay - and thats one reason why I started up my own business too.

I price my items based on the material costs (so what you would pay to buy the materials yourself) and a little on top for my time - thats it.

I can also work to a tight budget - I work backwards from the cost, keeping in mind the clients wishes / design ideas if they have any and work that way. If it can't be done for the budget then I won't pretend it can be. But I will do my best to get the best materials for the money that is available.

Vistaprint are pretty good tho' if you're wanted printed invitations rather than hand made.

I've made my own, I have really enjoyed it but yes it is very time consuming. Currently making the place settings menus etc. and so far I've spent half a day on it.

See that's the thing, i'm sure I could make the time, just not sure if I would be strict enough to actually do it in the end.

I want 100 invitations alltogether. But only want to pay about £100 - I have seen some printed ones on ebay for 28p each - i didn't think that that was too bad.

I have no idea what these things should cost. The ebay ones were just colour printed onto embossed card.

We are making our invitations, or I should say H2b is actually making them. Sorry I don't know how to do photobox or anything yet so I will attempt to explain them to you.

We have got A4 pearlized pink card, turned it horizontally and cut it into 3 - this is the overall size of them, rectangular and slim. We then got silver card and cut it slightly smaller than the pink and stuck it on with double sided sticky tape (glue too messy and not a good finish). So there is a thin pink border round the silver card. We then got some pretty transparent paper with faint silver heart swirls on them and cut this slightly smaller than the silver card and attached it to the silver card using little round silver pins, one in each corner. Oh and we printed on to the transparent paper using a fancy font before we attached it obviously.

This probably makes no sense at all! Not really hard to make or time consuming, H2b just made the template sizes, brought the guilotine (sp?) home from work and started a little production line. I suppose the time and cost really depends on what you make. Have to say though I am really pleased with ours.

    Good luck!

We bought the blank cards on ebay and printed off our own inserts. The cards cost us about £40 for the 100 invites and accept cards. We had to do our own as the venue offered us a large discount if we asked our guests to pick their menu choice before the wedding.....as we agreed to do this we could let them have more choice and the venue had less waste.winners all round?

I made ours because I couldn't find anything that reflected us properly! Too twee, too young, too pink, too much!!

I designed ours myself, played about over a few evenings and built a prototype. It was a cheque book design so there was quite a lot of precison measuring to do in the first instance. I spent an evening working out the correct order of production and assembly.

Producing the envelopes (RSVPs and the ones we wanted our invitastions to be sent in) took one evening - again a production line of rubberstamping, postal stamps and the application of clear address labels ( a tip from Sherrie, thanks Sherrie!)

To assemble and put them into envelopes took an evening and a half, again the complicated design meant that we needed to not rush this, but did get into a decnt rhythym.

We had 55 invitations in all.

HTh but not sure it does (!)

I made ours, i really wanted invties with a christmassy theme to them. And it order to get them you have to pay £££££.

We're on a really tight budget so they came in at just under £50 (this is including all mistakes and pre-mock up invites)

I am so pleased with them and the family seem to really like they too! It did take me a while to get them done but i did them over the space of a few months and gave myslef plenty of time.
