Invites *Flash* and mega FAIL!

DarkMoomin, 23 January, 2012 at 18:52 Posted on Planning 0 16

Hi all,

so, very excited as BM and I spent all Saturday putting together our invites, which OH had painstakingly designed and printed to be absolutely perfect. And we worked really hard to finish them perfectly, and put all the elemtns in the envelopes in just the right order so they were perfect. Then I got all excited, stuck the stamps on and chucked them in the post box. This was fail 1 - OH got back from weekend away and said he had really wanted us to post them together! but he accepts that he never said that so I couldn't hve known it was abig deal for him.

So, first the FLASH (apologies for poor quality!):

Invite outside:

Invite Inside:

RSVP outside

RSVP inside

Info book:

Envelope

So - for the FAIL!

I had dutifully weighed the finished invites to check they weren't over weight, but totally forgot about these new(ish) rules about how fat the envelope is, and the pearl on the front of the invite makes the envelope over the 5mm in just that spot! AAARRGG! So now OH is p'd off that my haste in posting them meant we missed that, and that our hard work to make them perfect is kind of wasted because theres a big risk people will end up being charged excess postage!

We have a plan to make a joke of it in his speech, and to put a pound in each persons favour if they do end up arriving with excess postage! But we are still upset that they have been ruined by a stupid mistake like that! ?

I really like your invitations and think they look lovely. The postage thing is annoying but I'm sure your guests will understand it was a mistake, and you didn't do it on purpose

Thanks freckles. OH did say he hoped that no one thought we were just ebign cheap in notpaying the large letter price - I said that if anyone thought that then I didn't want them at the wedding! I'd hope they know us better than that! ;o)

hopefully people will see the funny side, as it is totally the sort of thing I do - get everything perfect and make a silly mistake!!

Ha, I'm sure your guests won't think like that. And as you say, if they do, then they shouldn't be there anyway. It's just one those things I suppose. I'd be gutted too though, you just want everything to run smoothly, naturally!

Oh God - I hadn't even thought of that - I'm certainly not telling the OH that! Now I'm even more concerned! Hopefully the posites will be nice an realise its something special and just pop it through! ours did that with a few christmas cards that were over size this year!

Well if people start getting them with excess postage we may have to do an embarassing email and phone round to tell people and apologise....

It happens a lot trust me.

Happened to some friends of ours last year and no-one minded. Even if you took them to the post office and they were weighed it could still happen (and does) so don't worry!

They look gorgeous by the way, you should be very proud of them!

Aww, they're lovely! When I read "mega fail" I just imagined they'd all been printed with the wrong date and it was your mistake so you couldn't get a refund, or they'd printed the invitation inside the RSVP card and vice versa. Having them be slightly oversize and people having to pay excess postage isn't the end of the world. If you really think people are going to care, that idea of the 1 pound coin in with the favours is a cute one. I wouldn't advertise it as payment for the postage, but maybe as a lucky coin or something. Most people will have forgotten by the date of the wedding anyways. I wouldn't bring it up in the speeches, no one will mind, except maybe one grumpy aunt or something.

I'm sure it'll be fine, to be honest I would still go and get it- being intrigued about what it was!

I had a big fat fail on mine too- the invite has one RSVP date and the RSVP slip has another 2 days later! Ooops! Its only a small thing... xx

I'm sure it will all work out fine! You could perhaps ask friends if they have received it in a few days, and if they haven't just explain, I'm sure they will see the funnyt side and realise what the note from the Royal Mail is all about - if it comes to that!

Can I ask how your OH made them? I haven't got a clue where to start making invites and RSVP's....

    xx

Thanks everyone - feeling much better about it now! was very down about it earlier.

And I'm so glad you like the invites - we are very pleased with them.

In regards to how he made them - in part he just seems to have a natural eye for that sort of thing. But we searched the net for inspiration, and came up with an idea, then he used fotolia to find images, and coloured and tweaked and laid out.... He uses indesign as the software package.

So I guess really it was a case of having a desing idea and then finding images to realise it. I wouldn't have a clue where to start using the software tho!

I have already lined up my mum, my sister and OHs dad and brother and a friend who lives locally to report back on when they arrive and if they hd excess postage. I think once we know whether its everyone or just a few people or no one with aproblem we can decide whether to contact everyone and explain and apologise.

Thanks again for the kind words - this is such a nice forum!

    DM x

So.... went to post the overseas ones at he PO today - and they definitely do NOT fit through the little posty hole in the template.....

Have lined up a few people in different areas of the country to report back on whether they had to pay excess (I can't work out whether it will be applied this end or at their sorting office end..)

I think if it looks like its affecting most, then we will just have to send out an electronic communication to apologise and let people know that their invite maybe at the post office....*sigh* such a dunce.

Ah well, if this is the worst thing to go wrong I think all will be well in the end!
