I-pad

Knees, 19 June, 2012 at 15:18 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 22

We have just been given a very generous cheque by Mr Knees' grandad as an early wedding present and have decided that we're going to buy an i-pad to take with us on our travels. I am completely clueless and don't even have an i-phone, so I don't know where to start.

Are there different versions?

What accessories should I get?

What are the must-have apps?

Help me!

Mr RB has an Ipad and it's great. I think it's the ipad 2. There is new ipad 3 out I think?

OH got an Ipad 3 (I think - the latest number anyway) and to be honest we only use it for games. I play monopoly now and again, and sometimes go on fb and myfitnesspal and he plays some football manager thing. It is rubbish for hitched and general forum use. I also use draw something and occasionally use it as my kindle via cloud reader if I am so lazy I can't be bothered getting up to find my kindle, anything that requires actual typing seems a bit of an effort on it.

I've just been browsing the App store. I've noticed that the websites I use most often (Facebook, ebay etc) have their own apps. Do you need to have these or can you go via the internet in the normal way?

You can get to them as normal via the internet, but I find a lot of the apps better than the web pages (not sure about ebay but much prefer twitter and FB on the apps.). It's worth trying them out as the majority will be free and then just unload the app if you don't like it. I don't find using hitched a problem either.

I got ours refurbished from the Argos ebay store so it was a bit cheaper. They don't have the particular one we bought there at the moment but worth keeping a eye on and you could get a bargain 😃

We just bought one for my 90 year old grandad and he loves it. He mostly uses it as an e-reader but we're teaching him how to use skype too.

The tv apps are pretty good, iplayer and 4od for repeats, "tv catchup" lets you watch live tv.

What about movies? Our hotel in Fiji doesn't have a TV, so I wondered whether watching a movie would be possible. I know it's meant to be all romantic and that, but no TV for a week?!

BBC iPlayer, 4OD are great for catching up on TV (I think ITV have one too).

If you have Sky, Sky Go is utterly awesome - I have watched live football on the train before, tis great.

Trip advisor and Booking.com are very good for when booking holidays.

I can't remember the rest of the good ones but I will have a look when I get home as OH has nabbed it today

I love my ipad, i have the kindle and ibooks apps on it for reading books, i read blogs and forums on it (lots) and its great when we go away, I have the camera adapter thingy so i can look at my photos and email them if i want to, and we have found guidebook apps before for places we were going (and one of the best was free !!) i have quite a lot of apps relating to my interests like sketching and art ones too and a great moodboard app (which funnily enough is currently getting lots of use lol). Really really pleased with it and use it a lot.

Case wise i have the apple cover thing for the front (smart case or something its called) and then an incipio clip on protector for the back which works perfectly for me

I am posting from our new (to us) iPad and I love it. I'm not sure I would buy one new though? It's a nice free toy that we have but I'm not sure I would spend the amount of money apple expect for it.

You can rent or buy movies on itunes. I've never done it on a ipad but I assume it works the same as on our MacBook.

Sorry it's taken me a while but this is our iPad list of apps. Only got it pretty recently so there are probably more!

    Facebook, twitter, LinkedIn etc

Bbc I player, itv player, 4od - all great for catch up tv

News apps - sky, mail, Bbc news, sky sports, sky sports football

Tv guide - I find great for checking what's on tv.

Kindle - if you have a kindle account, you can also link it here.

Shopping apps - dominos, eBay, rightmove, trip advisor, auto trader, amazon, moonlight, Argos, odeon, tesco groceries,

Games - angry birds, cut the rope

Does are all the ones we use most often but I'm sure there are tonnes more out there! Hope that helps!

OH is considering getting one. He loves his i-phone but he's not really sure what he would use an i-pad for. He doesnt surf t'interweb, or play games or read.

OH bought one recently. I think the amount of money he spent on it is ridiculous but he is very into his gadgets. I like using it for browsing and playing draw something, but other than that I would rather use the laptop. Typing on it is so irritating. Although it will be awesome when we go on holiday.

Not really helpful in answering your question but I do find it hilarious when people use ipads to take photos and film, it looks like your taking a picture with a baking tray.

    Thanks CB, that's really helpful.

Faebelle - I've heard it's rubbish for typing, but I don't think I'd need to use it for that, other than perhaps the odd Facebook message or brief email. I do all of that kind of stuff whilst I'm at work, so it'd really be just for surfing the web in the evenings.

We (well the OH) got one on Saturday after he spent most of the afternoon going from to shop to shop as he had to have one there and then! Love using it to read books on and i actually prefer iBooks to the Kindle when reading. We bought it mostly for taking on hols and to watch DVD's.

Quick question do we upload DVD's to the laptop and "iCloud" it over or does it sinc with iTunes?

I really love mine. So glad I splashed out on it after ummming and aaaahing for months. My toddler loves it more than me though.

Get the biggest memory you can afford, because you can't add memory to it.

I'd get an ipad 2- the 3 is better but not in a way that massively changes anything other than a sparklier screen. I bought a 16gb ipad3 but took it back and got a ipad2 with 32gb; best decision ever.

It could never replace my laptop though. It's fun for what it is- a nice handy sofa toy. My fave thing is that it barely needs charging (once a week and I use it a LOT), and it's always on. No waiting ages for it to boot up, just grab and go.

Fave apps- millions of toddler ones, iplayer, kindle, various games, todo lists, but all time best is EVERNOTE. Changed my organisational life!
