Is 50in too big?

Buttons, 21 July, 2008 at 21:49 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 11

H has spotted a TV he wants, it's 50in and we currently have a 32in, which looks tiny compared to the 50in. My dad thinks its too big. H is a big film buff and has thousands of DVDs, so the TV would get good use. Its a great price too.

What size TV do you have?

My immediate thought when I saw the thread title was, "it depends how big your fanita is, surely?"

I think ours is 32 inches which is just right for the size of our living room (tiny). I think if we had a 50 inch, that's all you'd see in the room. That said, I don't really like huge tvs no matter what the size of the living space. I would consider a huge tv if we had something like a movie/entertainment room though.

I think it depends on the size of the room. Our friends have a 48" and it's OK in their lounge/diner/sunroom, but in our lounge it's be like sitting in the front row at the pictures!

[generalisation] I also think it's a boy thing about having the biggest toys... [/generalisation]

My dad has a 50 inch TV and to be honest it looks bloody ridiculous. His lounge isnt particulary massive but not small either. Personally I think its too big but each to their own I suppose.

My sister and her husband have a 50" tv - they have a big lounge (victorian house) but still it looks huge to me. I think however that it really depends what you are used to and the proportions of the room you are putting it in.

We've got a 40" tv and in our lounge i think that's really as large as we'd be wanting to go.

ours is 42 in and i hate it, I think it makes us look like those people who don't do anything but lie in front of the telly. I also came home to it without consultation. I have to say you do get used to them they and they don't look so monsterous after a while.

50" would be too big for me, but I know others are happy with one that size. Ours is 37, and still too big for my liking. We were intending to the get the 32", but then H spotted the next size up in the same range in a different shop for the price of the 32" in the first shop. I was at work when he bought it ?.

We used to have a 50" for a few months (rented it) but even H thought it was too big!

Mind you, we're in a teeny tiny cottage, and just the telly heats us up in the winter! ?

We now have a "reasonable" 40" (imo still too big!) that H is happy with. It's got good graphics, too, so he can watch his HD DVDs and Blu-rays and upscale his games and yadayada!

We have a 32in and it actually seems quite small in our lounge. H and I both want a new, bigger one. Flat screen. Think 50in might be a bit too big though.

We have a 42in, and our living room is a reasonable size (we have a 3 seater + 2 seater sofa, and there's still plenty room to move around, lounge on floor etc). I love the 42inch screen, and I love telly, and films in particular. However, anything larger than this would totally overpower the room, and look ridiculous.

If we had a really huge living room, I'd go for a bigger TV. But actually, apart from the room domination aspect, I think you need to be able to sit a reasonable distance back from a large screen to make the most of it. You want to be able to appreciate the whole screen at once, not just look at bits of it (I also prefer to sit nearer the back at the cinema for the same reason).
