Hello

Well realistically we may have to put half if not all our honeymoon on a credit card has anyone else had to do this?

Nope. We are having our honeymoon a couple of months after wedding, partly to spread the cost of things and ensure none of it ends up on credit.

I wouldn't feel comfortable paying for something that's effectively non-essential by borrowing, especially not at the high rate charged by a credit card. You don't 'have' to do it either. If it doesn't sit well with you, as this post suggests, can you consider delaying your honeymoon or opting for something more affordable?

I would hope not, but I am a tad traditional and firmly believe in having the honeymoon rather soon after the wedding, so means seriously thinking about options that may be closer to home. The main reason being that I don't want to have to sit around for a few months waiting, but then it would also be nice to delay it and have a nice treat once the awe of the wedding has worn off.

I can't say if we are as my oh is booking it as a surprise. If you are going to book on credit card, get a new one with 0% interest on purchases. I think m&s and tescos have one out with 15 months interest free. That way you aren't paying lots of interest but can still spread the cost. Just make sure you make the minimum payment each month and you can pay it off by the end of the interest free period. You also get more protection paying by credit card as they are jointly liable for any money you lose. Sorry if I went into Martin Lewis mode!

Yes and no. We paid for all of our honeymoon items on our credit card to benefit from the extra protection it affords you but we had the money there to pay for it.

It wouldn't sit well with me borrowing for a non-essentially like that but whether you do or not is only a decision you can make.

We are asking for people to donate for honeymoon fund rather then gifts so with that plus any spare cash left from wedding fund we may book a last minute deal but if we find we do not have enough funds to book something special we would wait until we can afford to go somewhere that we really want to visit not just book a place just for the sake of it because we are quite well travelled anyway and having been to the likes of Sri Lanka, Maldives, Thailand etc a holiday in Europe would not seem a special to us compared to our previous holidays.

I also do not think its a wise idea to start a holiday with your card maxed out as you never know what unforeseen circumstances you may find yourself in while abroad for example my neighbours were stuck in Thailand on their honeymoon with all the volcanic ash cloud drama which insurers did not pay out for so all the extra accommodation etc they had to pay for on their credit cards!

Yes..sort of.. We are having a honeymoon gift list, but in order to get in booked before everyone has made their gift we can pay for it and then the gift list money will be refunded to us +/- any diff. So I'll be putting it on a 0% card. I'm very good with my cards and either paying off or switching around so I'm not paying interest so I don't feel worried about this method.

But if you're paying for it youself, unless you can afford to pay it off within a certain amount of months then I would say you should stick within your means or delay until you can afford it.

We are paying almost £2000 on credit card - I really want to have it soon after the wedding, and other works in the merchant navy so if we didnt do it then then realistically we wouldnt be able to do it until next year, i would then feel it was more of a honeymoon than a holiday. We have taken out a 0% for 14 months credit card with barclaycard, and we have money set aside to pay it every month, we are also asking for money for our wedding so anything we get will be going to the credit card to get it paid off. I don't like using credit but we have had a lot going on this year, I lost my grandad, my uncle has been diagnosed with prostate cancer and my mum is having alot of tests done so we just thought bugger it - life's too short.

This definitely isn't something I would do, but I am very sensible money-wise. If it was interest free and I had a guaranteed plan to pay it off it might be okay, but unfortunately job-security isn't too high in my area at the moment so wouldn't want to rely on future income.

    WSS. Martin Lewis rules!

Seriously though, credit isn't always a bad thing if it's handled right. As long as you don't bury your head in the sand and are honest with yourself about what you need to pay back, and are organised, it could cost you nothing extra at all.
