Is anyone here on Thyroxine?

Fred&Ginger, 25 March, 2009 at 10:42 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 15

I was prescribed this yesterday after years of trying to explain that I really don't eat enough to have put on three stone ......

And did you lose any weight once you went on it ?(clutching at straws!!)

Thanks,

F&G x

Were you tested for hypothyrodism? You don't say you were, so it sounds like you were just given the tablets after telling them for years you don't eat enough to put on weight! I do hope your Doctor tested you and didn't just dish the tablets out!

I've been on Thyroxine, but back again now on Synthroid, which is AFAIK pretty much the same. It's taken nearly 18 months to get my thyroid levels stable, so I've only just recently started to lose weight - and very, very slowly at that.

It's no quick fix I'm afraid to say, but then perhaps my thyroid & metabolism is more fooked than yours (I hope so for your sake!), so please be patient and don't lose heart if weight doesn't drop off you quickly.

I am, but I haven't lost much weight since going on it, although like Peaches, it is taking a long time to get the right dose.

The weight that I have lost, I think is more to do with not feeling lethargic and being able to move more. I feel much less generally rubbish, and able to eat healthily and charge around.

I have been on thyroxine for 7 years after being diagnosed with an underactive thyroid and I still struggle to lose weight (putting it on and struggling to lose it was what made me go to the doctor in the 1st place).

My diet isn't always perfect, but there are long stretches (months, years - not just days ?) where I am faultless (and had a personal trainer for 3 years who eventually came to realise that I wasn't lying or just mistaken about how muc I ate and exercised) and I have never managed to be slim again - the best I can ever do is a size14, and still in the overweight category.

Sorry I haven't got a more positive story! Although in saying that, I used to work with a girl who has an underactive thyroid and is still a little slip of a thing. Don't know if she had any weight gain issues when she first developed it though.

I am on 175mg a day it has been the same for years and years. To be honest I have never lost weight by taking it and really struggle with my weight. I do notice if I miss a dose though as I feel rubbish a couple of days later, really tired and sluggish and my hair gets really greasy overnight!

Yes Peaches - sorry - I was tested for hypothyrodism.

Cherry_Valance - this is exactly the same as me. I would, however, be more than happy to see a size 14 again!! It's frustrating when people tell you to exercise and cut calories and you'll lose weight and just don't believe you that you do all of those things!

    I am on it - on 100mcg a day.

I also struggle to lose weight. It certainly isn't a quick fix.

I have just started taking it after being diagnosed with an underactive thyroid. Over the six months previous I had piled on the weight (totally unlike me as I was naturally pretty skinny) and in the two months preceding being diagnosed was eating a ridiculously low calorie diet and subbing meals with fruit and still putting on weight. I don't think that I have put any weight on since I have been on them, but i have not lost any as I have started eating crap again in the vain hope that the tablets will turn me into Kate Moss anyway - it goes without saying that they haven't ? caro hit the nail on the head in her post when she was talking about lethargy leading to lack of excercise being a big factor in weight gain and hypothyroidism. Anyway, hope you are feeling better soon.

Bloody hell. 500 mg is one hellova dose. And then to go to 75 mg! A huge shock to your Mother's system. I hope they monitor her really closely now and that she doesn't have any lasting effects from being on too high a dose. Jesus .. I'm shocked.

Are you absolutely sure it was 500 Kat? that is twice the maximum reccomended dose (I think?) 50 to 75 would make sense. 500 to 75 sounds absolutely crackers. Hope she's okay.

I have been on it since 1999 and am now on 350mg daily.

I have put weight on since being on it, being pregnant 3 times, but have struggled to lose weight. I did weight watchers. I was told that this is common to struggle to lose weight.

I have thought my dose was quite high, but am shocked to read a posters mum being on 500mg.
