Is anyone in Sales/Recruitment that wouldn't mind answering a salary type question ?

BellaPasta, 18 May, 2009 at 17:46 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 14

I've been offered a new job, first one after 7 years at home with children and was quite shocked (in a bad way)

Thank you

So what is your question? Are you asking us what salary you should be offered? If so can you confirm roughly where you live and the type of role you have been offered?

wss really, sales jobs salaries and t&c vary so much

however in my experience recruitment is generally shyte basic pay, and you make it up with commission

Thank you, it's a national role so am hoping they don't think they can reduce the salary because of my location, house prices around here are the same as London, I've checked.

Anyway it's a start up recruitment company so 0 clients, 0 candidates, literally me and my yellow pages, which is fine.

However the basic salary is ok £22k but the commission is 10% up to the first £10k billed which I feel is outrageous given the current climate and well just outrageous. In my last role I was paid a basic of £40k as a manager (in this role I'd be a senior consultant, 2nd in command of a team of 5) but my commission was 25% of everything I billed over and above £40k per 1/4. This was only in 2002 so I really wasn't prepared for that much to have changed, am I being unrealistic ? I just feel in a start up £120,000 is quite an ask right now. Beyond £10k it jumps to a whooping 12.5% ☹️

I'd be grateful for any thoughts.

Tbh I'm not really an expert in this, so couldn't comment. My only suggestion is that I am aware of people who have had several interviews within recruitment agencies and so perhaps it might be worth seeing what other companies are offering near you?

Sounds pretty hard work to build the biz up from nothing, but an exciting challenge! Good luck either way!

i'm not exactly sure what you mean by that...are you saying because there's a recession you should be getting more commision? how would that work?

if it's a brand new company they'll hardly have money to burn...you can always negotiate more after you've proved yourself a success

Well yes actually in sales roles I do feel it's entirely reasonable to expect more in commission in a recession, in the good times you can cut back what you pay people simply because the work is easier and they can do more in the way of volume, at times it's like falling off a log.

I've already proved my success as far as I am concerned, I have 10 years experience, but you are right I might be able to revisit it later.

hhhmmm...well i like your optimism. but at the mo' i think you're quite lucky to have found someone who's recruiting at all tbh.

and while you may have had a proven track record in sales, that is from seven plus years ago. i finished in sales about four years ago and wouldn't put too much store on my success before that if i was returning to sales now. things change a heck of a lot.

Which is exactly why when I do find somebody who is recruiting and get them to take somebody on I think I'm worth more than 10% but anyway I can give it 6 months and update my CV if nothing else.

well if that's what you think, why on earth have you bothered asking for other peoples opinions? ?

? Sorry have to agree with Keiren

You haven't had a job in 7+ years, we're in the middle of a recession and you are unhappy with what you've been offered. So don't take the job !

Sorry but I work in recruitment, and I had to actually ? at this..

Considering our competitors are closing down offices left right and centre, and there's redundancies internally and internationally in all disciplines, I would a) stay away from recruitment myself, or at least b) be grateful for even being Offered the potential of commission ?

I'm support within the team(s) here, so I don't have the same pressure on me, mind. But the atmosphere within the company is NOT great at the moment as it is.

I think people are being rather hard on the OP who is, I imagine, just trying to get a better idea of market rate. Yes, we're in a recession but the idea of market rate still exists (even if it's lower than it might be at other times) and people are still negotiating on salary- it's not a case of saying, "tuppence ha'penny? Thank you, sir!"- one ought to act in a professional and proactive way and that includes getting the best deal one can on pay, albeit a deal that might not be what it would in boom times.

She's been out of the job market for a reasonable time but this employer still wants her, so it's perfectly reasonable for her to assume she's of value to them, rather than cringing in pathetic gratitude for whatever their first offer is.

Gosh what a mean spirited response, maybe because I haven't had to go to work for the past 7 years I've forgotten what it's like to bow and scrape to other people.

The fact is I couldn't care less if there's a recession or if other people are loosing their jobs through redundancy, that makes no difference to what I will work for, we all have our price below which point it isn't worth physically going out to work.

Ouch, that's not really a very nice attitude you have there is it? Whoopee-do youve not had to work for 7 years, things have changed in those 7 years, and whether or not you care about the recession or not, there are less jobs around that pay less than they used to.Ok you have your bottom line, if you dont think its' enough money then dont take the post, simple.
