Is anyone making their own flower arrangements?

swcbride, 8 July, 2012 at 18:42 Posted on Planning 0 8

We are thinking of making our own to cut back on some costs, but I'm worried that it will add to any last minute preps. I'm thinking that I'll have time to practice as there is over a year til the wedding and I'm looking at what is available now as we get married at the end of July next year. For bouquets, we might just have hand tied ones and then table centrepieces are going to the pretty simple, as the venue are providing a lot already so we'll just have small posies. We might just pay for a table centrepiece which we can use for the register table and then move to the top table.

What are other people's experiences of making their own flower arrangements?

Questions I have for anyone who might be doing their own...

  • Where are you getting your flowers from?
  • How many days before the wedding are you getting them?
  • What kind of difficulties have you faced?
  • Where are you storing flowers before the day?

Thanks in advance for your you thoughts!

I'm going out on one and doing something I read about in July/August BRIDES magazine!

It's a vintage brooch bouquet, something entirely different but hopefully it'll be a family heirloom! I've attached a couple of links for you to see Smiley smile They're relatively easy to make, and you can pick up old brooches in charity shops for a £1 or so each!

That's a lovely idea, SadiexLynne! I assume you wouldn't be able to throw the bouquet? But I love that you will be able to keep it as an airloom!

We (I) are quite keen on fresh flowers and I'd love to be able to throw my bouquet for someone to catch - where is another question as I'm not sure where that will work at our venue!

My mum has done my flowers as she is a retired florist and wouldn't have it any other way, however, I insisted that she used atrificial flowers.

Normally she would buy fresh flowers from a wholesaler, although I saw a report on here and someone had asked there local supermarket to keep there best flowers for her. Anyway I helped my mum make all of the bouquets by doing all the wiring (so the heads don't fall off). She would normally buy them the day before to ensure that they are fresh, bear in mind how fresh they may be if you buy from a supermarket.

She always binds the stems and then very lightly sprays them with a very fine mist and then puts them in the garage dark and cool, if you have flowers that open and close then make sure you get them into the sun in plenty of time to open but not to long that they will wilt.

If you wants hand ties I would say roses would be the easiest, but then I am not the expert! Hope this helps x

Thanks ESW, that does help! I'm a bit worried about having to do things very last minute. With artificial flowers, did you do them all in advance?

If you're not dead set on fresh flowers, you can get really nice artificial bouquets already made for a fraction of the price. I'm going to have this one from www.thebridesbouquet.co.uk - it's only £45 which I think is a bargain! My BM posies are only £15 each!

I'm having a brooch bouquet too and will also be making it myself.

My bridesmaids will be having paper roses made out of the pages of Pride & Prejudice (my fave novel) and the website I'm using to make them is www.100layercake.com/blog/2011/07/22diy-storybook-paper-roses/

Finger crossed they all look like they should.

We sat down with the future mother in law and made the bouquet, bridesmaids posies, buttonholes and a table arrangement that can be moved from registry table to top table. We decided to do it ourselves as we could pick the artificial flowers in advance and have time to sit and make them and are currently in storage ready for the big day. It was our way of adding our stamp to everything and a nice touch to think we did that!!! We got the flowers from an outdoor garden centre.

Have fun in what you decide Smiley smile

    Hi,

I have just done the flowers for my daughter`s wedding in sept. I used gorgeous realistic artificial ones from Van Hage garden centre. I watched some florist demo videos on u tube to find out how o do it. My daughter seems very pleased with them and they are exaactly what she wanted, and for a lot less money. I did one first to see what she thought, just buying enought flowers for that one. Then did the others.

Hope this helps, Oh I got the florist tape on ebay
