Is everyone managing to get petrol OK?

overtherainbow, 14 June, 2008 at 09:43 Posted on Planning 0 21

My local Sainsburys has sold out and they were still queueing! I have been putting it off because I don't believe in panic buying but my warning light came on this morning so I had to get some. I got some at my local Esso but still only put my usual amount in which is enough to last me until the panic is over!

Luckily I have a full tank which should last me a while. Which is a good job because quite a few of our local stations have run out of diesel!!

But what a shame if I run out, I won't be able to go to work!!

fortunately, I filled up yesterday as I was on empty-I didnt realise there was a strike on. I remember a few years ago, though-it was a nightmare people were queing for hours. Luckily, as a district nurse I got a special `pass` as an essential care user and got through the blockades!

It's silly really - If people would just put in what they need rather than filling up when they don't really need it, there would be enough for all. My hubby does a 35 mile round trip everyday to work and uses about £25 a week in petrol (economical car!) but his boss says if he can't get to work it's not their problem. There is no public transport to where he works and even if there was , it would take him about 4 hours to get there! It makes my blood boil when the politicians say they want to get people out of their cars and onto public transport - there aren't enough buses running the routes needed for everyone to do that!

I know, it`s a joke isnt it. Car drivers are sitting ducks for taxes. I`d happily get public transport if it were reliable and more affordable (but I do have to use my car to get around my patients). My petrol allowance hasnt gone up since the `90`s!!

There would be no way on earth my OH could use public transport. He easily drives over 1000 miles a week and has lots of equipment he needs with him. Saying that I only work 9 miles away and apart from paying a taxi, there's no public transport that goes my way either!!

It's right though, people just panic and cause the problem. It's the same when shops shut for bank holidays. I'm sure people stock up thinking the shops are never re-opening!! It drives me nuts!

Too true! I worked in Leeds city centre for 5 years and I had to use the bus because I didn't have a parking space and it would have cost me £55 per week just to park. We had a bus to Leeds once an hour and more often than not, it didn't turn up. It took well over an hour to get into Leeds whereas it takes 15 mins by car because I can use the motorway and the bus cant. I didn't start work till 9 but had to catch the 0730 bus in order to get into Leeds in time for work. I finished at 5.30 but couldn't get a bus home till 6.15 so it was 7.30pm when I was getting home. And to top it all.... I had a car sat in the garage which I was having to tax and insure and couldn't use! So in the end, I thought Sod it! I've had enough!

I'm worrying a little bit because every petrol station I have driven past up has people queuing! I do 50miles a day so my tank only last 5-6 days. Plus with the wedding being this Saturday and having guests travelling from Scotland and West Mids I hope they can make it!...including my parents and my dress!

I work in the fuels industry and with very well know petrol companies and I completely agree that you shouldn't go out panic buying. It is that behaviour which pushes the prices up as demand increases, the more prices increases, the unhappier customers will be!

If people fill up as normal there is absolutely no reason why stations should stock out - but unfortunately, people, including my lovely H2B panic and go out and buy more than they normally do, and more than they would normally use..just in case!!

My husband has made sure he filled up early this week so that he doesn't run out of petrol for his wedding cars!! On top of that there is a fuel protest by farmers and truckers on a go slow on the main road out of Bournemouth this morning so we have to travel miles extra to get the bride to the church on time!! It really does make life difficult for people like us!

Hmm, maybe I should have filled up at Sainsbury's this morning. There wasn't a queue. I normally fill on a Tuesday and only have enough left to last me til then, so if I can't get on Tuesday that's three of us who can't get to work (I take two colleagues in every morning and home every evening).

The strike is only 4 days. Only certain brands are affected, so it's only one station in nine that isn't getting deliveries, and they all keep enough to last four days without a delivery anyway. It's people panic buying that causes them to run out.

I haven't tried yet but my light is on. I think I might fill up today as seeing that I am in Cardiff and I have a wedding Beford on Tuesday, Stroud on Friday and Southampton on Saturday and I then have to collect my son from Cheltenham, there's no way I can afford to run out, although I think those trips might take a couple of filling up. It couldn't have come at a worse time to be honest. Definately agree with taking what you need though, if it weren't for the weddings next week I would probably just put my normal £15 and make do.

I had to queue up for about 20 mins yesterday morning - also noticed my local garage has but a limit on how much petrol you can have in one transaction.

We must be in the minority around these parts then...our local tesco has no diesel but plenty of petrol, the esso across the road is the same, but surprisingly, our local Shell garage hasn't run out of anything and in none of the three petrol stations were there any queues!!

H2B has been to fuel twice already since yesterday - not sure why. I think he just likes to panic or join in with the crowd!

That is surprising, seeing as Shell is the only one affected by the strike! I wonder if people have avoided it because they know it's the one affected and, without checking, think it will be closed.

That's exactly what I told H2B!! I think people are avoiding it completely and going elsewhere...but now we know..i think that's where we'll continue to fill up!! I best not go giving the secret away now...hehe

I did manage to get petrol. The first try at Morrisons were out but then Asda had some. I'm a bit worried now because of all of the travel next week to my three weddings around the country! I might have to start walking!

The added complication to this is that Tesco are in the process of adapting the software on their petrol pumps - so that you can chip and pin at the pump - There are glitches in the system though and at the moment the stores which have had the upgrade are constantly crashing, a number have had to be closed for 24hrs or more. There's plenty of fuel but it can't be accessed.

this is having a knock on effect as people see they're closed and assume there is no petrol, so they panic buy elsewhere, which, added to the number who needed petrol anyway going elsewhere, is creating short term shortages.
