Is Hitched 'closed' at night these days?

Peaches, 20 October, 2008 at 08:26 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 14

For the past couple of days, maybe more, I've tried to log on during UK night-time and found Hitched to be unavailable until about 8 am.

Have I missed something along the lines of a notification that it's 'down for maintenance' or 'shut up shop' or something?

Clearly it's the best time to be shut for all the UK Hitchers, but what about us 'foreigners' ?? I miss catching up on stuff when you guys are in bed, especially now when I'm here* all alone and need some light reading material!

Yes, it's a PITA hitching in the far east because the site seems to be closed until about 3pm (which is when eldest daughter returns home from school so any freetime for hitching ends....)

Hm, I wondered the same thing when I couldn't get on a few times. Annoying when you're wide awake in the middle of the night and want to while away a little time playing catchup.

Ah see, I tried to get online to reply to the other thread and to ask how you got on at the zoo yesterday! I was thinking of going, but decided because it was the weekend, it would be heaving. Was it?

I ended up getting the Hippo and going to the Botanical Gardens. Wonderful! Walked from one end to the other, but didn't have the energy to go into the Orchid garden - I was pooped! How do you cope with the humidity? I thought Houston was bad enough, but I was wringing wet just sitting down, never mind walking around ?

Then I found Carrefour (sp?) in Suntec City. Bloody hell that place is massive!! Both Carrefour and Suntec! Sheesh, after a workout in the gym first thing, then the Botanic Gardens, THEN Suntec, I fell into bed last night and zonked out!

Went there again this morning as Mr P wanted to go to Apple, but the EpiCentre didn't open until 11 and he had a meeting to go to, so we had to leave.

Any suggestions of somewhere I can go early evening by myself .. like now really?! Don't want to go on the Singapore Flyer as we'll do that on Friday when his work is done, but could do with getting out of the hotel, although I'm having a brain fog as to where to go alone. And in the AC !!

ETA the above was to Hitched in Paris. It would have made sense as hers was the last post when I started typing, but I got distracted part way through and subsequently others had posted afterwards!

    HI Peaches,

The zoo was busy but not completely mobbed (not as bad as I thought) and we had a good time. As we are here for a while, we did half of it slowly - we'll do the other half another time.

Humidity is an issue (I gavebirth here 5 weeks ago so 9 month pregnant wasn't fun). However, like most Singaporeans, we spend most of our time in air con (cars, shopping, home, offices etc). It's only really the tourists who trog round in the heat and humidity day after day ?.

If you want to stay in AC, you would really be limited to shopping I think. Try Vivo City (largest mall in Singapore - bigger than Suntec!) or a wander along Orchard (mall-hopping). I'll put my thinking cap on...

ETA the museums are very good but most close at 5 or 6 pm so no good for today, but maybe another day - they have air con! http://www.visitsingapore.com/publish/stbportal/en/home/what_to_see/museums.html

Thanks Hitched in Paris (were you in Paris before Singapore?!)

I'm all shopped out for the moment. I'm not really a great shopper at the best of times, especially not for clothes. There was only one time in my life I loved clothes shopping, and sadly that was short-lived, so it's not something I yearn for. Although everyone who has been here says the shopping is fantastic! Yet to be convinced!

Mind you, I got excited yesterday when I found Tiger Balm lol. The real makoy too!

Mr P is gagging to go gadget shopping. I'll leave him to it I think! ?

It's now 5.30 and I can't be arsed to go out now. Think I'll have early room service and watch some TV. Or read. Or do some homework (sign-language). Or Hitch ?

PS. I've seen more locals out than tourists .. especially today being Monday. And how come all the builders work on Sundays?

    Hi Peaches

Sorry for taking so long to reply but kids needed feeding! Was in Paris before, then Singapore, Azerbaijan, Dubai, Singapore, Spain, Paris, Scotland, now Singapore for the third time. Got married in Paris, hence the name.

For gadget / IT shopping send Mr P to either Funan Mall (reputable larger retailers) or Sim Lim Square (mall with lots of smaller retailers that do very good deals - if you want someone to build you a pc or sell you parts, this is probably the best place). Epi Centre at Wheelock is best for Macs.

Shopping is a bit of a national pasttime here (that and eating) but if shopping isn't your thing there is still plenty to do. The museums are great and I love Little India. Chinatown is a must too, Sentosa is fun (better in the week than weekends and prob more for kids) and there are some great walking tours with really knowledgeable guides.http://www.singaporewalks.com/. Alternatively why not take in an Asian cooking lesson? http://www.corianderleaf.com/courseschedule.html or http://www.raffles.com/EN_RA/Property/RHS/Restaurants_Bars/Raffles+Culinary+Academy/Class_program.htm. Spas are also everywhere and Spa Botanica was voted the best in Singapore - which is really something as they are generally excellent here (also in the top 10 urban day spas worldwide). http://www.spabotanica.com/

Hope this helps a bit. Not had much of a chance to look round myself, having arrived here in June, found somewhere to live, a school for daughter 1, furnished said house and had a baby.... Enjoy your stay and let me know if I can answer any questions for you!

Not such a stoopid question. The rest day here is Sunday but manual workers can work 7 days a week or on rotation including Sundays. Labour is cheap here and developers want buildings built quickly. Builders tend to be immigrants on temp or sponsored visas so want to earn quickly to send money home (usually to India, Sri Lanka, Indonesia etc).

Good grief HiP .. that's quite some moving around you've done! What does your husband do? Clearly you guys like the expat life .. some amazing places you've lived.

I'll tell Mr P about Wheelock. I'm sure that'll be on his to-do/see list!

Thanks for all the tips of things to do. I've really had a lazy day today spending most of it online, and most of that on Hitched! What a time waster this computer is!

I've heard about the cooking lessons. What a good idea - I'll look into that. And I nearly took myself down to the spa here today, but I just was too lazy to even do that.

Tomorrow I'll get out and about again. I think the heat and humidity just put me off today. I want to go to Raffles for a Singapore Sling, and an internet wierdy has offered to take me to the British Club, so that'll be fun.

    Thanks again ?

No problem. H works in oil (not literally) so Houston has been on our list of possibles for a while (as well as Angola, Nigeria etc *sigh*)

You have to get to Raffles for a Singapore Sling, and the British Club is OK (but more British than Britain - check out the suits of armour in reception!)

http://singapore.angloinfo.com/information/whatsontoday.asp This is a good site for finding out what's happening on a day by day basis.

Enjoy the rest of your stay (sometimes just chilling out in a good hotel is as good as exploring!)

Re the downtime, I asked on the feedback bit and Dean said a script is overloading the server (it runs at night) and that it was supposed to be ok now, so obviously it isnt.
