Is it a good time to be looking for a new job?

Rosencrantz, 24 November, 2008 at 10:18 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 5

I'm geting a bit fed up with the company I work for. They seem to be saying one thing (ie: no forced redundancies) and then doing the opposite (announcing forced redundancies!) I'm also quite bored with what I do. There are no prospects for promotion although if redundancies and restructuring does happen within the organisation, there may be opportunities to move sideways.

I work in the hospitality industry where we are already seeing the affects of the recession with many people cancelling their events. The mood within the company is pretty dire at the moment and moral is very low. It has made me think even more seriously about moving on. I think I have transferable job skills and I would quite like to change roles so I am more involved in helping a business save money rather than a job where I am pressured to bring money in to the business.

The thing is, I'm not sure whether now is a good time to be thinking of moving companies. I've had a quick look at a few recruitment sites and it seems that people are still advertising for staff in the roles I am interested in. (Something in the area of Business Analyst or similar).

Should I sit tight and weather the storm at my current place or make the leap and hope it all works out?

It depends - I'm job hunting at the moment having just been made redundant and am looking for an analytical type role too. Where I am there is very, very little around that would suit me, but there are lots of options if you're less fussy than I'm currently being so I'm thinking of starting up freelance. If you've got a role already there's no harm in keeping an eye out certainly

I was always led to believe that January was a good time to be jobhunting, as people often fancy a change after Christmas/New Year.

It never hurts to take a look around and see what's out there, but you might not find much advertised at the moment.

To give you some hope, it's not all doom and gloom out there - we had a new Commercial Manager start 3 weeks ago, and she's our 4th new member of staff in about 4 months.

I don't know about the rest of the country but in our area there is a lot of expansion and so plenty of jobs. However, I think one thing to bear in mind would be that if you moved and redundancies came up in your new company they could allocate them on a 'Last In, First Out' basis.

Thanks everyon for your replies. I've been having a look on some recruitment sites and there are a few things which look interesting.

Torieyes, I didn't think companies could make people redundant on a last in first out basis anymore? Something to keep in mind though if they can.

Rosencrantz - what do you do? I too work in hospitality and you could probably call what I am a Business Analyst - PM me if you like if you don't want to say what you do or who you work for on here. Our company has various roles available right now, but of course the dreaded redundancy hting could hit us no doubt
