Is it time to start putting money under the mattress?

cjb, 8 October, 2008 at 11:31 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 7

With the global financial crisis being in the news constantly, I am beginning to wonder exactly how bad things are going to get.

Mr. CJB and I are in the position of being 'relatively' comfortable on a day to day basis - we have some savings in the bank but nothing over the threshold where we wouldn't be compensated if our banks went bust. I'm starting to think we're fortunate, to be honest - I'd be absolutely sick with worry if we had tens of thousands tied up in various banks, and I feel so sorry for people who've found themselves victims of banks that have got into financial trouble, especially older people who are losing retirement funds and money they won't ever be able to replace.

Even though we're told that people will be compensated, this is clearly not going to happen overnight. What will people do to fund themselves in the meantime? What would you do if you couldn't access your salary, your savings, use your credit card etc? Will cash become king?

I don't usually keep a huge amount of money in the house but I'm wondering whether I should start... does anyone else think the same (without giving away addresses and inviting people to burgle, of course!!), or are you happy that the Government will stop things reaching a complete meltdown?

The measures announced today should mean that the banks are at less risk of going bump. I don't think there's any need to panic just yet.

Hmmm... My Grandmother was a teenager during the 1930s in the aftermath of 1929. Living through that era and the 2nd WW, she now has dozens and dozens (I kid you not) accounts with a huge range of different banks. Up until recently, this drove my parents absolutely potty (Mother has power of attorney) and they still are not 100% sure they know of every account Grandmother has. But now, they are actually a bit happier about all those accounts as she does have a lot of cash stashed in all those accounts. They now see it as spreading the risk somewhat (although I consider it to be a very low risk as I don't think the Government will let any bank go under)

Me, I have just three accounts - current, savings and an ISA! ?

Wot - no tin under the bed? [wink]

That's interesting isn't it - your Grandmother is obviously of an age where she had her fingers burned previously - I bet more of us will be a bit more cautious with where we put our money in future - possibly no bad thing.

Sadly no tins under the mattress - it'd make a very lumpy mattress! Although I'm no princess who could feel a pea...! ?

Quite recently, Mother was talking about closing a few of those accounts and consolidating the money in fewer places, she never actually did so and is rather relieved now, as the sum would have exceeded the limit for compensation. Nanna always said never to put all of one's eggs in one's basket and she does have a very deep mistrust of Banks that has never really left her.

You can imagine she must have been overjoyed when her only sister married a bank manager! ?
