Is it too early to send out invites - thoughts please

freb2reh, 6 October, 2010 at 09:51 Posted on Planning 0 11

I was wondering if now is too early too send out invites for a July wedding. My OH is keen to get them ordered and posted as people tend too make plans for Summer Hols about now. Another reason is we could do with a good idea of numbers in order to arrange transport from the venue to the Hotel and of course for the caterers. Would love to know your thoughts and when you were all sending/sent the invites for your wedding?

I think it is a bit early - maybe you could just send out save the date cards so that people know to keep the dates clear?

    Hi,

    Good thread!

It's difficult, can see your OH point of view totally.

If you do it all ' by the book' it says something like 6-8 weeks beforehand.

However: Thats not practical, so really, its up to you!

We're getting married in April 2011, I am sending out our invites first week of November, to avoid xmas confusion.

You could either do the same or wait till maybe second week in Jan?

How about sending out Save The Date cards and then sending your invites out later on?

I know July is peek season and when people plan on going on holidays but the flip side is, sending them out now and people (the ones you don't see every day) may (and this does happen) forget the date.

We're getting married in August over the bank holiday weekend so have decided to send Save the Dates out this month and our formal invites, probably in Feb/March.

I'm worried too that people might have booked holidays over that time, plus we need to confirm to hotel if anyone wants a room, so we need a bit more notice than is 'suggested' ?

We're sending out save the date cards, around a year before our day! My brother already has his 'save the date' as he lives in Australia, so he needs time to save and book his flight. We're not doing the deed until nov 2013 Smiley smile

Our big day is September 2011 - we sent out our invites this week as although we're having a UK wedding some people will be coming some distance (including her work colleagues from Scotland) and several relatives who will also be wanting to book flights.

Because of the distance involved for some, which may well involve an overnight stay, we thought it best to give people plenty of notice, so they can work out how much it's going to cost them, so they can save up if they really do want to come. Of course, we'll do all we can to help with train timings, prices etc for those not internet savvy, but will update our website nearer the time so we don't get asked the same information 20 times.

Many think it's too early - but we had one positive response from a work colleague 20 minutes after I gave them the invitation pack...

I made little slips of paper with details on and popped them into Xmas cards for every guest I wanted to invite, that gave them 7 months before the event itself........

as you also mention transport, when I put on buses I made postcards (with a vintage bus on them) and asked them to tick if they wanted transport or not and they sent that back with the RSVP. Something to keep in mind?

I'm getting married in August 2011 and have a lot of the same worries as you, plus we're getting married on a Thursday so I wanted to give people a lot of notice I sent my save the dates out August this year. I'm not planning on sending my invites out until March/April though we've had a lot of feedback from our save the dates with people that we didn't think would make it saying they'll definitely come! Now were just worrying that we may have to many! ?

Just joining this thread, because I just made a duplicate one!

I have about 8 months to go, and I thought it is too early. I think 6 months is plenty early enough.

Never heard of 'Save the date' cards. But they sound like a repetion of invites, so I'm not sure I see the point?

Thankyou for all your comments, much appreciated. I am a bit reluctant to send STD's as it's just more money out the budget. Also I forgot to say that if we don't have RSVP's by March 1st then the Hotel rooms reserved for the guests will be let go. I think although it's early I will plump for end of Nov mostly so we can get their accomodation secured and all the travellers will be able to budget. Thanks everyone.
