Is it wrong not to have a band?

Ms Nic, 15 September, 2009 at 10:41 Posted on Planning 0 21

Talking with OH the other night & trying to choose our wedding band, we kinda came to the problem we dont LOVE any of the wedding bands we have seen & feel like we're forcing ourselves to look at these bands as its the 'done thing'

We are both young & like a good boogie, maybe we should be looking for a really decent Dj with flashing lights ?

Please discuss....

Bands are not for everybody so if you would prefer a DJ then I don't think there is any issue with that.

There really is no right or wrong - its an individual choice.

We wanted a band, but the ones we liked were way out of our budget, and then we found out that our venue don't allow bands - so problem soved - just having a disco!

Hi we thought of having a band but then thought we love to boogie as do our friends and family also i watched an episode of four weddings and they had bands and nobody was dancing!!!! i don't want that, i want a real fun night so we are going to have a disco with some proper cheesy songs and some 80's tunes thrown in, oh and maybe a jive for the parents. Not everyones taste but our lot will love it. And they dont stop for a break.

I don't think there's anything wrong with not having a band. If you both prefer to have a disco then that's what you should do.

We're having a ceilidh band but to be honest the weddings I've been to have had discos and everyone had a great time!

I dont think its wrong at all. We are having a DJ and I dont think we even considered having a band, we both love dancing and cheesy music so a band wouldnt have been right for us. We have a great DJ and cant wait to sit down and pick some of our favourite songs for the play list!

What Gillsy said really - if you don't love any of the ones you've seen, just opt for a DJ I say!

A DJ is actually included in our wedding package so we have one anyway, but we are considering a band, mostly because my dad loves one in particular and he has offered to pay for it. But otherwise I don't think we'd go with one either!

Its absolutely not wrong - Your day should all be about you and your tastes so if you can't find one that works for you then don't have one. Make sure that you choose a DJ who is sympathetic to your requests and will play them.

I love the fact that DJs appear to be being associated with cheese above! If you find the right one, this needn't be the case! Unless that's what you want though!

We didn't even consider having a band, we are just having a dj. I think it's just a matter of preference and also budget!

We booked a great band but when I heard them in the flesh, I was a little bit disappointed. But i actually barely got to dance to the band, half the time I wasnt aware of them and the guests LOVED them. The dancefloor was never empty!!!!! So dont worry about booking a band for you, book for your guests. And if you want a DJ instead have that too.....

I'm glad I didnt pay 4 figures for our band, and for what they were worth (guests enjoyment too) I barely was aware of them. Think I had 2 dances all night!

    Teehee...

Its a common problem. Everyone wants a piece of you and you want naturally to talk to everyone at least once that night. Before you know it its gone. I had that at my own wedding nearly 10 years ago now - I didn't even get to eat a piece of my own cake...

We find that quite often the Bride and Groom are on the floor for the first couple of numbers and then as you say they disappear until about 11pm or so to dance the last hour or 45 mins, leaving the rest to the guests - That said, there are couples for whom music is everything and its a substantial outlay that they are prepared to make not just for their guests but for themselves too.

Its all about personal choice and there are no rules.

I would prefer a DJ for the evening. My aunt had a small band at her wedding but they played during the meal and a few songs to start the night off, then they left and the DJ took over. I definitely wouldn't want a band all night, I don't think my family are the type to appreciate that kind of music.

It all depends on what kind of music you like, it's your day. I think in terms of trying to please everyone, a DJ is your best bet.

Hey chick...about 3 months ago we considered having a band and that was only because oh step brother is in one so we had a lightbulb impulse moment....we then heard the price and decided not to bother, its just one more thing to budget for and tbh a dj and some flashing lights is enough to please us and our guests x

Just to pick up on the cheese comment.............

back in the 70s the majority of DJs were hobbiests and doing it for beer money. Times have changed and the 'wedding DJ specialist' now exists! (check out the WDJA linky in my signature). They are professionals....doing it full time ....and their emphasis is on doing what you want . If you choose a good wedding DJ they will have a meeting with you, work out what kind of evening you're after, make suggestions that you might not have thought about.....and play the music you want. If you request no cheese....there won't be a YMCA in site. Times have changed.....but public perception takes a lot longer.

As for the band/DJ discussion........its all down to personal preference. I've worked alongside some fantastic wedding bands that have been hard acts to follow....and i've also been in a situation where I've been asked to start earlier and the bands set has been cut short. With a DJ...you've got all the genres and decades at your fingers tips....so its easier to please everyone.

Thanks Nic its very much appreciated. My thoughts exactly, i don't mind squeezing my lessons in after hol, in fact that may be better. I just don't want to have to change cars with 3 days to go! And waste the 60 quid I've already paid to him. oh well fingers crossed xx

    It's entirely your decision!

For us, we really wanted to have a ceilidh band and then a disco but in Scotland having a ceilidh band is obviously more common. I don't think I would have chosen a band over a DJ if it wasn't a ceilidh band though, purely for the price aspect.

After shopping around we managed to find a ceilidh/disco for a reasonable price, it is all about shopping around! The only problem we had was that OH hates accordians so we were looking for a band with no accordian, which all seemed to be much more expensive than with an accordian! ?

The other alternative is having a Mobile Disco that also provide Ceilidh....and I know of an excellent one based in Glasgow if you're interested!

Were having something in between - have hired Luca (who I think is a HIB) who is a wedding singer - so you get him singing live, but to essentially a backing track. Also have a disco in between and after his 2 sets. Booked him on the basis of his website which has loads of clips and he's been really helpful and flexible for our high-maintenance requirements! If you wait 6 weeks, I can tell you what he was like on the night!
