Is my reception idea really cr@p - wobble wobble

PennyFarthing, 12 August, 2009 at 20:27 Posted on Planning 0 24

I'm at work this evening so I'm very sorry if I don't reply straight away. A lady I work with asked what we were doing after the church to whichI answered we were going to have an afternoon tea reception and then a hog roast/bbq in the evening.

"Oh"

"you'll have a lot of pi$$ed people at your do then"

"well they'll only be having a couple of sandwiches and a cake".

Feck, is this true and have I just lost the plot with my ideas and should be having a "proper" meal? Hell, I'm having a huge wobble about this now.

Firstly, it's yours and your partners wedding day... not anyone elses. If that's what you want then you have it!

I personally think that it is a lovely idea!!

    Chin up! ?

    Don't worry it sounds lovely?

I think it depends on timing and letting people know what to expect - my aunt got married a few years ago and there were just weird canapes? don't think there was any cake either - given that my dad is her brother and only sibling, it was odd that she didn't let my parents know, especially as we were travelling up that day and had made no arrangements to eat before the service...but then my family are the kind of people who need to eat little and often?️

There is no right or wrong about having a big meal or something smaller (you're feeding everyone again in the evening anyway) Have you sent out invitations? If not maybe you could add info about food? Or if you have, just send out info/ word of mouth.

    Hope I helped!

Penny it sounds fine to me - how much do people need to eat?!

how long will it be between afternoon tea and dinner? and what are you having for the afternoon tea (food wise)?

She probably thinks you mean a cucumber sandwich and biscuit followed by a pork bap later on. Ignore her - sounds like you have a great plan.

MMMMMMMMM yummy, can I come? lol

Your reception, your choice. She is probably jealous.

You will never please everyone with whatever you choose. We all have different ideas about how to 'get married' and yours sound wonderful IMO.

Good luck and I bet it will be really popular.

Well apart from bring a vegetarian and so maybe the hog roast is a bit of a no-no for me... for all you meat eaters out there it sounds a lovely idea. It will be a much more relaxed atmosphere than a sit down meal and you'll have much more time to spend chatting to your guests.

Sod the woman at work, just don't invite her lol I often find that when ppl think your ideas are good theyre annoyed they didnt think of it themselves and the only way they know how to respond is to try and put a downer on it!

Don't worry, it will be a lovely day. xx

Your plan sounds lovely to me, I think tea and cake followed by a hog roast sounds brillent.

If it is what you and your OH want stick to your guns what other people say doesn't matter

Has she never seen a hog roast? Those things can feed 50,000 ... I don't think your guests will go hungry, don't worry about it. Sounds like a great idea to me!

How very dare she... she has no idea how much food is involved in your afternoon tea anyway... blimey you could be providing hampers for all for all she knows.... the silly bint! I've seen fabulous afternoon tea spreads which would fill you up way more than some of these arty, farty, filling a quarter of your plate, fancy schmancy sit down meal affairs!

And V jealous of the hog roast, really wish our venue could accomodate this... you having apple sauce and stuffing too....slurp!!!

Thank you girls, you have made me much much happier (and even brought a little tear to my eye! ?) as I was feeling very down about this when I got home tonight and announced that everyone was "pi$$ing on my wedding parade!"

Thank you thank you thank you.

Wedding happiness will resume from this point on and I shall - using one of the phrases used above (sorry newHitched won't let me check who it was) - in future tell my work colleague or anyone else who scoffs (excuse the pun) at my ideas, to "nob off"!

Better not be cr@p as its a lot like what were having!

Itll be fabulous - dont listed to people who have outdated ideas of what weddings 'should' be like - original and different is just great in my opinion!

here here Groom with a view! I think I said on another post recently, who are we to have to conform to 'traditions' of days gone by - Hitchers rock and maybe WE should start to bring in some new traditions!

Hog Roasts are delish - I go to Edinburghs Farmers Mkt specially for their hog roast with crackin' and stuffing and its just 'hmmmm'. I'd loved to have had something like that at my wedding! (went with haggis instead!)

Yes, your colleague can knob right off, silly bint.

You know i love your ideas ? The way mr delicious and i are planning to get around the thing about people expecting a wedding breakfast meal will be to put on the info sheet in the invitation something like 'afternoon tea will be served at x time, followed by an evening BBQ at x time' which hopefully will tell people they need to eat before hand. We might also put on a 'if you have any questions' too, just in case. although i don't know if that is a good idea but i've thought about it.

I think its a really nice way of doing things (obviously) and that people will just think its fun and nice. and besides it not like all people are getting is a canape, a sandwich and a cup of tea is it really?

    ?

*jealousy* thats the only word springs to mind, or old & grumpy (your colleague that is!) and she has clearly never experienced the wonders of hog roast, its gorgeous and plentiful. Dont worry about it PF you have so done the right thing, id love to be at a wedding with hog roast & my mouth is watering now!

Aaaaw thanks. I think I just had a bit of a wobble because I had been going along la la la la everything is going okay, these are my ideas la la la la and then someone came along and questioned them and I wasn't ready for it iykwim?

I think we will be putting "followed by an afternoon tea and an evening bbq/hog roast" so that everyone knows to make sure they eat lunch but that there will be food, just not what they may be expecting....although it won't be half a sandwich, a french fancy and a cup of tea lol!

Not sure it's jealousy, think it's more old, grumpy, set in her ways and not quite sure how to deal with a less conventional wedding. I think she also automatically thought afternoon tea + bbq/hog = cheap * she may not have meant it that way, but that was what it seemed to imply.

Pah, even if I was going to invite her to the evening (I wasn't), I'm not now lol! I shall invite lots of lovely Hitchers instead

Do you know actually i wouldn't say it was unconventional. In the past people used to just have tea parties all the time, especially if they couldnt afford the big fancy meal. Its just not done anymore thats all, and i would say if anything its quite posh of you and me to do a nice tea party in the style of 1930's pre war garden partyesqueness ?

I love your ideas - I'd really look forward to afternoon tea AND hog roast if I saw it on a wedding invitation.

What time is your ceremony? After 'lunch'?
