Is there a 'grown up' version of going to Alton Towers for the day?

Purple Pixie, 3 April, 2012 at 12:32 Posted on Planning 0 20

We've decided that we'd like to arrange a day out as our gift to bridesmaids/best man/ushers (and us ?). We've been thinking about Alton Towers but I'm a bit worried that we're a bit too old for that or that we should/could be doing something different.

The age range is 28-37.

Help?

Never too old to scream your head off on a rollercoaster!! I hear the Rita queen of speed ride is really good (that was from my 42 year old friend!)

When I was a kid I remember Alton Towers being the place where they had 'grown up' rides, so I think it's fine. And it's always fun to be a kid for a bit anyway.

Alton Towers is fantastic! If it's something you'll all enjoy then go for it ? Myself and Simon are in our thirties and still try and go every year!

They have a hotel and maybe a spa, so anyone that doesnt want to play can go off and be grown ups there!

OMG! I just had a whole post written out and lost it! ARgh!

Anyway here goes again.....I used to work for Merlin (owner of these parks) for 9 years so will bore you with some info which might make things easier for you.

Thorpe Park - Target audience - Thrill seekers; aged 15 years and above. Has some awesome rides inc Collussos (held the world record for most inversions); Stealth (Europe's highest launch coaster); Detonator (Europe's highest drop tower). Saw - too gruesome for me :-) and the new branch coaster that has been launched this year is Swarm. Plus Nemesis Inferno (sister coaster to Nemesis at AT & my favourite coaster of all time!) I don't know where you live in the country but TP is most definitely my theme park of choice. It is a smaller space so everything is in clsoer proximity and you can see clearly where you need to go to next. A definite rival to AT.#

Chessington World of Adventures - Target audience - families & under 12s. No good for you guys. When we were younger this and TP had the opposite target audiences, but it changed about 12 years ago. As a consequence people still rock up now looking for the big rides!

Alton Towers - Target audience - both of the above. AT has the largest space and can cater for at least 30K guests per day. So it therefore houses rides that will suit both target audiences. Because of this too you will find that you spend a lot of the day walking around from ride to ride and land to land, trying to ascertian where you are. It's still a good day out, but bear in mind you'll put in a lot of mileage! It still has some awesome coasters too: Nemesis, Air, Oblivion, Rita.

    Tips for the day

I'd advise you to take a day off work and go Monday - Friday when the children are at school. NB - the last week of June & first week of July (roughly) always is full of children though as it's end of term school trips! Personally I always go at the beginning of June or end of September.

And the one thing that people do which leaves them running around like headless chickens is to dash from ride to ride, zig zagging all over the place. If you take a park map they are designed in a circular fashion. Start at the entrance and work your way round. I know it sounds simple but trust me it'll make it so much easier on the day. You'll get to go on everything eventually just in a more logical order!

Oh....and if a ride has broken down or late opening, don't fret. You'll get to use it at some point in the day (unless a full day closure); but they are made so that the very slightest thing highlighted and it will shut down.

Mmmmmmmmm I'm trying to think of anything else I can say to help you?!?! Shout if you want any more info. I think I've waffled enough for now.

I loved Rita queen of speed, I just wanted to go on it all day.

First went to Alton Towers when I was 21 and LOVED it. I'm 26 now and would be so excited if I was invited to a day out there.

I'm the same - have been on it twice, first time I was pretty sure I didn't like it, second time I convinced myself! Now Simon has to go on Oblivion on his own while I stand and watch.......!!

I love Alton Towers and have gone at least once a year for about the last 5 years through my work and I agree with all the above you're never too old, I'm even considering it for my hen weekend!!! If you can I'd recommend going when they do the Scarefest around Halloween, the park is open till late so you can ride the coasters in the dark and they also have special scare mazes where live actors chase you!!

Never to old for Alton Towers but depending on where you live Thorpe Park is great for adults as well.
