Is there anything that works to keep cats out of the garden?

Roobarb, 28 July, 2008 at 18:05 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 19

We are getting bothered by neighbours' cats doing their business in the garden ? b@stards. Anyway are there any recommendations for anything safe, legal etc that we can use to keep them out? Plants, sprays etc?

As an aside, why is it that dog owners are (rightfully) faced with fines if they don't pick up their animals' mess, whereas some cat owners just chip them out and let them sh1t wherever they like "ah but it's more difficult to control a cat" says my mum, when I whinged to her about it. Well my sister has 2 cats and they always go in a litter tray.

Some say that they don't like citrus peel, lemons, oranges etc.

My cats also have litter trays emptied daily. But try asking them not to go outside to poop and they don't listen!

? I can appreciate it must be difficult. But from my POV, if I wanted to clean up animal cr@p I'd have a pet of my own! The citrus stuff is worth a go.

    Nothing that lasts.

I've tried putting industrial strength chilli powder across the top of my fence and on my lawn. I have also chicken-wired the edges of my flat roof so they don't go up there and use it as a litter box. ?

    I totally agree with you.

A friend has a battery powered sonic type deterrant. She thinks it works and says the cat only comes back whenever the batteries run out. I've seen them for sale in B+Q and Homebase for around £30.

I've been too lazy to go get one so can't give a personal recommendation.

We've had fair success using the ultrasonic cat/dog repellers though don't position them too close to the house as some people (me included) can hear them.

Otherwise I've heard that getting a dog solves the problem ?

We are having this nightmare at the moment! there is about 5 cats on our street that seem to prefer our garden to their owners!

at the moment we have little sticks that you put in the grass (cant remember the name but im sure we got them in B&Q) which seems to have deterred them for the time being, if that doesnt work i think il look into those battery powered things

There are plants you can buy that give off a strong smell (on internet) plus they dont like lemony smells.

B&Q do a repellent in a white pot that is quite effective.

We have 2 cats that are mainly indoor cats so go in litter trays but when the neighbours cat started doing its business in our garden we were a bit put out so got the repellent from B&Q.

The neighbour at the back of us put up spikes on the fence we share (never consulted with us), they must also have got a sonic thingy too as our cats dont like going to the top of our garden as they must be able to hear it at a certain distance which isnt very fair but we have no choice but to listen to their kids screaming on a sunny day when all I want is peace and quiet! Wheres the repellent for that?! ?

Have you thought about talking to the cats owners? I'd rather someone discussed it with me and we could come to some arrangement.

    My (least) favourite subject.

All of the following do not work for me:

    - Spray

    - Gel

    - Sonic repellant

    - My own urine (that one was fun)

    - So called cat repellant plants

I've had limited success by putting prikka strip (google it) on the tops of my fences. A couple of stubborn cats can actually get on to it although they get stuck - I then have the fun of soaking them or pushing them off the fence panel. It doesn't look as bad as it could and blends in quite easily as there are several colours available.

Thats what our neighbours have put on the fence that we both equally share.

I thought it was a bit off to do it without discussing it first but ultimately we had the last laugh as our one cat just stands straight on it with no problems!

It actually needs to be more like the anti-pigeon stuff but obviously too spiky isn't child safe (or burglar safe apparently). I've contacted the manufacturers ?. Anyway, it's given me hours of amusement watching soggy cats desperately trying to avoid my super soaker without hurting their feet - that really has discouraged them from my garden.

My Dad uses used dried out tea bags soakd in Jeyes fluid, he just replaces them when the smells gone every few weeks to a month, so far it's worked a treat even in the rain!

    ?

I haven't seen it in the act or know who's cat it is, if I did I'd soak it with a water pistol/speak to the owner.

My 2 year old son would love a dog, but all that would do would replace me having to clean up cat sh1t with dog sh1t ?

Meant to say yesterday - kep your lawn short - most cats aren't so keen to dump on a short lawn.
