Is this a crazy idea?

loves-young-dream, 23 January, 2013 at 21:04 Posted on Planning 0 31

So my dream wedding would be outside, even if it'll probably rain!

Apparently this isn't legal in the uk? So my idea was to first marry in registry office just us and witnesses, nothing formal just jeans and tshirts, not counting this as a wedding, just signing a form as such! Followed by a ceremony outside, which could then be performed by anyone I guess as its only pretend? Then we'd say our vows etc then

What do you think?

church or wedding hotels isn't really 'us' and we're struggling to find venues that hold ceremonies, and as I said I'd love it to be outside!

Is this weird? Xx

    Hi?

Could you not find a venue that allows ceremonys outside?

We are hoping to marry outside, (weather permitting) on visiting venues we come across a few that allowed marriage outside.

    Where are you based?

As far as im aware, aslong as there is some sort of structure outside, that has atleast four wall, you might be able to obtain a licence for it. I saw this done on Dont Tell the Bride the other week. So i think you can get married outside aslong as there is something like a bandstand or gazebo type thing ?

I may be wrong but its definitly worth looking in to.

    xx

Friends got married in Chesterfield & they stood in a gazebo in the grounds of a hotel.

We went to a venue in Suffolk where you stand inside a small, open aired chapel type building, but all the guests are sitting outside on chairs

In scotland we went to a wedding which was on a headland- no building around them at all

Its worth checking what the law actually is where you want to get married. BUT, if you want to do it your way, why not?

Thanks for your replies, I kind of picture it to be just chairs outside and an archway of flowers!, I guess that wouldn't be possible!

Lannyb27 that wedding in the pictures looks beautiful though!

Definitely possible if the venue has the license:

It is legal but depends on your location.

One of my couples are from London but got married in Scotland just to be able to have it outside

We're doing what you have in mind to a tea!
Just doing the legal bit the day before, then having our actual wedding outside. We've hired some land and have giant tipis as our "venue"

This is the kind of thing we're going for:

Perfectly possible if it's the kind of thing you want. My advice would be to have a look around and see if you can find what you're looking for- but if not, don't be scared of doing your own thing. Smiley smile

This is what i thought the law was, you can get married outside so long as something is over your head that is a permanent structure, so a gazebo/bandstand

In Leicester I had a wedding outside - metal permament gazebo, and as far as I can remember they had to make the call -in or out 1/2 hour before and stick with that.Cant wait for my next one outside

Do the legals separately perhaps, that's what we're doing. We're having a humanist celebrant, we're writing a ceremony -with her - that reflects our personalities and style as a couple, and having the day exactly as we want it, where we want it. Smiley smile

I asked my venue about this and apparently you can only get married in a permanent structure which has been approved a license. That could be anything outside so long as you have a roof over your heads when you get married. The guests can all be outside without a structure over them. Marriage laws in Scotland aren't as strict as England so possibly they are allowed to marry without a structure in place.

We considered this! You can have a humanist ceremony done anywhere outside you like, and they do it much like any other wedding ceremony, including swapping rings etc.

Just bare in mind, your family may not see it as just form signing at the registry office. In the end we didnt do this, despite wanting an outside wedding, as my mum hated the idea of missing the moment when I became a legally married woman. But if your both happy and families are too, its a great idea.

    Hi VintageBride32,

I'm getting married in Berkshire and have found a few places that have caught my eye (but nothing firm yet): Lillibrooke Manor Barn (Maidenhead) has a lovely cloistered area. It feels like a big open courtyard, but the bit where the Bride and Groom stand is slightly under cover. We're going to see it at the weekend, so will let you know our thoughts. Also, I've come across The Swan at Streatly (just north of Reading). They do ceremonies on their barge, and it looks lovely. We haven't gone there as it only seats 40, but I thought I'd let you know that there are loads of options!

    Good luck x

This is exactly what we're doing. Get married in reg office with just 2 witnesses (my dad and his mum) on the wednesday and then on the Sat we're having the "wedding". Its in my grandfather's garden and we're having a family friend perform the ceremony which we're writing ourselves.

You can get married outsdie as other have said, in England where some venues have a licensed strucure. In scotland i believe you don't even need a structure.

But you can do what you want, its you're day. we love doing things differently our own way. no bridesmaids, no white wedding dress and a lovely garden party!

    Hi,

There is a place where you can have your wedding outside and is stunning. Its all legal as it has three walls and a ceiling. Its in west sussex though. Its in Nymans national trust gardens. i was going to get married there but they were re designing the garden where the ceremony took place and wouldnt be ready in time for me. Google the place and take a look. its purely stunning.

My sister got married at Swarling Manor in Kent - it is an elegant barn / gardens venue, you can hold the entire ceremony outside, bar the few minutes where you say the official vows, where you just move under the pretty gazebo. It really was just like an outside wedding. Website here: http://www.swarlingmanor.com/ (though I can't get the images to load, maybe just my machine) and facebook page for the venue is here - there is a pic in their photos of someone having a flower arch just like you said! https://en-gb.facebook.com/pages/Swarling-Manor-Wedding-and-function-venue/125008544186162?sk=photos_stream

Would really recommend it if you consider this area, it was such a lovely day.

You can get married anywhere you want in Scotland, there isn't any restrictions on needing a permanet structure or things like that. I went to a wedding a while ago where they got married on a hill in the middle of nowhere by a humanist minister.

I know our humanist minister has conducted weddigns all over Scotland in some weird and wonderful places.

Thanks for all your replies! We have found some venues so think we will do the idea of having a wedding at a registry office the day before and then a wedding blessing at the venue. Who performs this blessing? I would want someone 'proper' not just a friend or something?!

and will guests think it's weird we're technically already married? I don't want it to feel like our wedding at registry office so may just have both our brothers there, don't want my mum coming and crying I want her to cry at the blessing!!

In the invites ill just say it's our wedding blessing?

Its so exciting!!!! Thanks for all your help xxx

As you are already legally married you can get anyone to conduct your blessing ceremony. If you don't want a friend to do it then I would recommend a humanist as they are experienced and they will meet you beforehand and more or less write the ceremony with you. We used one for our childrens naming days instead of a christening.

    Good luck and happy planning
