Is this grounds for culling?

emma numbers, 20 August, 2009 at 12:02 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 16

Got an email from someone with the heading 'PLEASE CIRCULATE... SERIOUS' warning me (and 50 squillion others judging by the amount of email addresses) about the danger of strangers selling perfume in car parks.

I replied to her:

Hi S, no need to worry, this is an urban legend. You can check these sort of emails and stories out at www.snopes.com.

And got a reply from her:

I don't always read emails b4 forwarding them

So, ignoring the use of text speak in an email for the moment, would you cull?

I would see what effect sending a message asking her to therefore not forward anything to you, ever, had

Irritating sure, but if you a seriously considering a 'cull' over this then she's not really a proper friend.

I agree it's really annoying...but culling does seems drastic! Is this a good friend or an acquaintance? Maybe you should just take away this experience and adjust your expectations accordingly. I've done this with a previously close friend - can't really cull - but am definitely taking a firm step back from the friendship.

    hope that helps!

I'd reply asking why on earth would you forward something onto me that you don't think is worth reading yourself? Please don't!

I'd then cull depending on the reply ?

I'm just flabberghasted that someone forwards this crap without reading it. I have forwarded the Snopes link before thinking she'd take the hint.

I have now replied asking her not to email these to me. I can't really cull as she's girlfriend of a close friend of Mr Number's. I like her and everything but am just becoming more aware that we don't much in common and think very differently.

? at the 'it's not extreme enough to cull' replies. I would totally be considering it. But then I would be considering it over email jokes too.

Well, it's not something I'd cull over but it's just so odd, I think I'd assume it was supposed to be a joke (sort of "silly me, I must read things more carefully").

I would be tempted to reply "Then I'll make sure I delete b4 reading them"

Bloody hell you're a harsh woman, Lois ? Seriously though, I stopped 'joke' texts and stupid warning emails years ago by just being blunt and saying a) I don't like them and b) I always think that the senders are stupid. Not many of my friends were guilty, but the ones that were stopped after I made my views clear. No need to cull whatsoever. Also surely its normal to make acquaintance with some people in life who don't necessary share all of your belief or value systems. It seems a bit harsh to cut out everyone thinks a bit differently. That's not aimed at you, Lois BTW, just pondering.

For a while my email sig block said "If you receive something that says 'Send this to everyone you know, pretend you don't know me". It didn't have any effect, sadly. ?

    I'd assumed that Emma was:

    a. referring to the fact her friend forwards things without reading them, rather than the fact she sends silly things; and

    b. joking.

Exactly. Blindly forwarding emails is stupid. Forwarding chain emails is stupid. Either way, it's an opportunity to cull the (brain)dead wood

Cull on the grounds of absolute stupidity, text speak, poor grammar, and a huge ego!

(If she's "sooo popular lol" she won't even notice!)
