It's Peter Kay's fault I feel like a pariah

The Beast, 14 December, 2008 at 23:57 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 22

Why does everyone love this man? Why does everyone think he's funny? I don't understand it. Just because it's true, it doesn't mean it is funny. If you want really funny observational humour may I refer you to Stewart Lee. Or Charlie Brooker. Or even Jack Dee in his heydey.

Peter Kay is responsible for only one good thing, Phoenix Nights. His stand up is lazy and unoriginal and Max and Paddy and Britain's Got The Pop ... made me want to boil my head. He's also a money grabbing barstard, releasing a dvd full of adverts, interviews and bits that weren't funny enough to make into previous dvds.

Why can't people see this? Has he brainwashed everyone? When I dare to mention I don't find him amusing I'm looked at in horror as though I've just suggested eating a baby. Is there anyone else out there that can see the truth?

I don't find his stand-up routine funny but I loved what they did with the Pop Idol thing that was on tonight.

I loved Britain's Got the Pop..., probably more for the fact that it was a send up of sh reality talent shows than because I found him particularly funny, but other than that he leaves me pretty cold. I never got into Phoenix Nights or Max & Paddy. I've not seen any of his standup on the grounds that the rest of his stuff doesn't tickle my funny bone.

I find him amusing. But his autobiography was dire. He was trying to make a joke out of everything and failed badly.

The only standup who has ever made me really laugh was Bill Hicks.

I'll tell you about someone worse than Peter Kay... tonight I went to a hotel to see a Peter Kay 'Tribute Act' for my work Christmas party. Dear God please never make me sit through that tripe again.

Never saw Pheonix Nights/Max and Paddy. I find Peter Kay a bit funny, he's nothing major.

Now, try not liking Billy Connolly, fark me people seem to adore that man and he is terrible. Maybe slightly funny about 25 years ago for 3 minutes.

Well try being MrDD - he can't stand Python, and whenever this comes up in conversation everyone starts quoting Ni NI NI etc at him. Oh how he laughs.

I'm not fussed on Peter Kay or Billy Connolly. I was nearly lynched on Saturday night when I dared to question the comedic values of Lee "poor man's Norman Wisdom" Evans though.

Peter Kay isn't funny. Lois is right about Billy Connolly too - he hasn't been funny in years.

Don't really see the appeal of Lee Evans either.

FARK ME Lee Evans is the least funny person I ever had the misfortune to listen to. While we're on the subject..Jerry Lewis, to whom Mr. Evans owes a lot I feel.

Lee Evans beats them all for unfunniest, surely? No one should ever feel THEY are the odd ones for not liking him.

Lee Evans does indeed suck donkey d!ck.

Peter Kay is over-rated. Alas, WTP loves him. At least we are united on the crapness of Sweaty Evans.

I'm much the same with Ricky Gervais and The Office. I've never found RG funny, and people look at me like I have two heads if I dare say it out loud.

I don't think he's funny either but I don't like any of those comedians (I put Matt Lucas and David Walliams in there, along with Ricky Gervais), they are all dire!

Ricky Gervais is just desperately unfunny - and I can't stand the office. And you're right, if I say it in public I get these withering looks.

I like Peter Kay - a lot of his observational stuff is so true - maybe it's because I come from Manchester and I recognise a lot of the things being said and done - might they be a local thing? Especially "put big light on".

Can't stand Lee Evans either. He is just trying to be Norman Wisdom and coming up short.

Bill Bailey however - now there is a very funny man. He did a very small gig on Wimbledon Common during the summer and my sides hurt at the end.

I agree with Nun about his autobiography, its rubbish, he's lived the dullest life ever.

I also can't stand either Ricky Gervais or Lee Evans, just don't get them at all.

I found Celebrity blah blah on ice was funny, but don't like anything else he has done at all.

I do however like Bill Bailey and saw him in London last week, very funny and very good at ad libbing.

I used to love Peter Kay. I loved Phoenix nights and his early stand up was funny but then I'm from Lancashire and his observations are very true. Now though I think he's crap. That Britains got.... was the most unfunny thing I've ever seen. Which was a shame because the idea of it was genius and it could have been brilliant.

Lee Evans is not funny. In fact I've never watched him completely because he annoys me as he's so not funny. I feel like having him under the trade descriptions act for calling himself a comedian.

Never liked Ricky Gervais/ the office.

I also don't like Little Britain and imagine this.....I also found 'Vic and Bob' totally crap as well. In my sixth form I think I was the only one who didn't like Shooting fucking stars.

I'm not desperately miserable though I do find Russell Brand funny and Allan Carr and Michael Mcintyre.

I'm from the North too but I still don't find it funny. It's not necessarily 'funny cos it's true'.

I also can't bear Ricky Gervais, (although The Office is a work of genius), or Lee Evans. Alan Carr makes me want to commit Hari Kari. Give me Ross Noble, Mark Thomas or Stewart Lee anyday.

I like Peter Kays stand up but didn't like Phoenix nights. The programme last night, I enjoyed the send up of X-factor but apart from that it was okay.

Billy Connolly - loved his stand up but that was from a good few years ago and the only I see anything on the tv is him doing a tour around whatever country.

Can't stand Monty Python, never have got the humour, I just find it very stupid and not one bit funny.

Ricky Gervais - liked the office but don't like him doing stand up.

I can't think of any comedians that I really like. maybe Allen Carr.

I just don't 'get' Harry Hill and people think I'm odd for that. I went to see him once and sat stony faced while people around me laughed so much they couldn't breathe. Not keen on Lee Evans comedy either, although I saw him interviewed (in serious mode) once and he struck me as a very interesting and intelligent person.

I do like Peter Kay though, and Russell Brand. And Billy Connolly.
