I've earned my place on the grammar pedants bench

Ann-imal, 11 June, 2008 at 16:33 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 7

In the past I've been known to amend pub menus written on chalk boards when they refer to "chip's", "pea's" etc and it annoys me when I spot mistakes. My sister has just moved into a new house and the builders are still finishing the rest of her road. I visited her last night and there, in the garden of a neighbouring property, was a sign asking me to "keep of the grass". After I nearly wept and then ranted to my hubby when I got home, it wouldn't stop festering and annoying me that a printed sign hadn't been checked! So I've just emailed the building company to tell them how much it made my eyes bleed! Have I earned my official pedants membership now?

Personally I think emailing the company was a bit ott, not like the berkertex one here which was a public advertisement. My OH is a handyman/builder and quite often has to write notes like this, but he's dyslexic so when he writes "wet paint on cubard" I don't think you can moan.

I was in a local shop and saw a sign that said 'cheques will no longer be excepted'. I pointed out the mistake to the assistant, but I just got a blank look in return.

That's dreadful as it actually means the opposite of their intention. It kind of makes you want to go in there and pay by cheque to force them to acknowledge the mistake!

Tahdah - I understand that people may have problems with spelling, but this is a very large building company and the sign must have been proof-read (or should have been) before printing it! This wasn't just a hand-written note!

Ahem, 'pedants' bench' if you please.

I've got my quotation marks wrong now haven't I? I can never remember if it should be ' or ".

The parking machines in my local town have "coins excepted- 5p, 10p, 20p....." etc. written on them, when they actually mean accepted.

I was going to take a photo for the website someone set up (Hazel?) but couldn't remember if it was still going.
